7800N DDNS on 3G

Post by AndrewC »

Hello,

I am trying to setup DDNS with No-IP on a 3G USB Dongle Setup. The reason for this is so I can access remote controllers whilst not needing to travel across the UK. I am trying to setup so I can use VPN and Port Forward for accessing these remotley as well as the routers webpage if needed.

I havent tried it with the VPN or Port Forward yet as I am trying to access the routers web page externally first, this is what I have done so far:

Changed the routers port to 8080,
Setup a Virtual Server to forward 8080 externally and internally,
Enabled remote http access

When I go and check the IP linked to my no-ip account it shows the internal IP of my USB Dongle, how can I change this?

I can also log onto the wifi, access the router with the external IP and then when accessed from a different connection, I am unable too?

Also whats the easiest way to setup a VPN? Thanks

The no-ip account is registering with your 3G dongle, hence when your IP is changed or updated it is pointing to your 3G dongle.(you can setup your no-ip account on the 7800 series (see the attached screen shot), as the 7800N does not have usb port I'm not sure how you have the 3G dongle setup/connected)

If your planning on port forwarding with your 3G dongle, you need to be able to login to the dongle itself, but normally you need a static IP SIM to do this, otherwise your connection will be running NAT by your ISP (Three, EE etc)

There are providers that provide these static sim solution so you can port forward.

Below is a link to the PPTP server setup on the 7800N. (if the 3G connection is the primary WAN and you don't have a static sim solution the PPTP server/remote access feature won't work)

PS you need to remove the virtual server rule as this is not needed, all that is needed to enable remote access

Thanks for the response.

First off, it was my mistake, it's a 7800DX router, the dongle is plugged through the USB port on the rear.

Second, I would need to contact say o2 or EE for a static IP to a sim? I am trying to get my head around setting up PPTP for remote access into the internal IP's.

Thanks,
Andrew

What IP address does the 7800DX get from the dongle?? (you can check this under 'Status >> WAN') if its a internal address eg 192.168.0.x for example DDNS won't work, but as you need a static sim, your IP address should be static anyway, so you won't need DDNS.

If your looking for a static sim have a look at this website http://www.nucleusnetworks.co.uk/, give them a call and explain that you have Bipac 7800DX and the model of your dongle, and want to port forward and use VPN PPTP and they should be able to point you in the right direction. (you might need to explain that dongle has the APN/ username /password pre configured you might be able to change this on the dongle but you will have to check this yourself, when using a static sim you will use a custom APN/username and password so this might be issue also)

Attached is guide on how to setup a PPTP server on the 7800DX
