set up problem

Post by Flimbyite »

Hi
Received my 8800AXL today.
At first I couldn't see the router on the network, so I unplugged the ethernet running from the router to my switch and into my pc.
Now I could see the router
I managed to get it set up on plusnet and got connected to the internet.
The problem I have is when i disconnect the ethernet cable from the back of my pc and plug it back into my gigabit switch the light doesn't come on at the port where the ethernet is plugged into or any other I connect it to.
My other devices work ok on the switch and the switch is only a couple of weeks old (a netgear GS308)
My pc is connected to the switch along with a NAS drive and printer and now says there is no internet connection.
Everything worked ok with the old router, has anyone any ideas of what I'm doing wrong?

It also says that it is 100MB full duplex and not Gigabit when plugged directly into the pc.
The main reason for purchasing the 8800 was to get the gigabit lan up to my gigabit switch.

Also it it advisable to separate the 2.4 and 5 GHz wifi?
How do you set this up?
Thanks

I have a similar set up - have you unplugged the power cable of the switch and plugged it back in again? It could be a faulty switch too especially if your PC doesn't recognise that the switch is a gigabit one.

Thanks ricke17
I tried switching it back off and on and nothing changed.
Plugged my old 10/100 switch back in and that works fine.
It's strange how the gigabit switch worked fine until I plugged the new router in.
Anyway it is on its way back to Amazon to be exchanged for a new one.

I was getting the 100MB speed when I had the ethernet plugged straight into the pc.
Maybe I need to replace the cable running upstairs as it was a few years ago when I installed it.

My wifi speeds have improved compared to the old plusnet router which they supplied.

Do I need to tweak the default wifi settings to get the best out of it?
I saw splitting the 2.4 and 5GHz channels somewhere else on the forum or the amazon reviews.
I was wondering how to do it if anyone can advise.

Thanks

Is it a Cat 5 cable? My cable from the billion to the switch is a cat 6 cable - hopefully a replacement router will help.

I'm not sure what it is. I installed it quite a while ago so I think I will need to replace it.

So is it the billion you sent back or the switch?

Received the new switch today and connected everything up as usual.
Same problem as yesterday.
I have also put a post on the netgear support forum to see if they have any idea why it cannot connect.

Weird - the only other thing to check is to see if the ethernet cable is a cat 5e or cat 6 (usually says it on the cable).
