Students...Slowing down the internet

Post by bandbshrewsbury »

Hi

I have a 7800N on BT Business. We have two students staying and while they are in the internet crawls along even though we connect at 14mbps and test show actual throughput of 11mbps. I know they are to blame for pre dialup speeds because if I change the wireless password hey presto everything flies along instantly.

I have given them static ip addresses and tried to limit bandwidth in QOS (wan to lan) and still the network dies.

My question is this, can I limit someones bandwidth in such a way that they can not bypass the limits?

Thanks

Pete

If they are paying guests, then why not just get another line put in and just adjust your channel to 3 away from their connection, so as to avoid a channel conflict.

You should be able to do it using QOS alone, but I think you will have to apply limits in both directions to make it work properly. Just using WAN to LAN limiting will not stop them saturating your upload bandwidth which will cause the apparent slow-down.
