Yes, nanotm, I agree with pretty much all that you've stated. I hadn't anticipated a situation of 'some interleaving' v 'no interleaving', though, and on reflection you could well be right about that. Perhaps that's why, when I requested a level of 8, BT just didn't seem capable of setting it to that.
The business of interleaving reminds me of the new BT scheme, currently undergoing trialing, for reducing noise and crosstalk on the copper loop of a VDSL connection. (Its name escapes me for the moment). Those users on FTTC perhaps forget that a copper loop still exists and that, for some people, that loop will be quite long. With vastly increased operating speed on the fibre loop, this makes for potentially higher levels of crosstalk on the copper section.
