Wireless Guests - Feature Request

Post by billyt »

Occasionally I have people in the house who might want wifi access to web browse but I don't necessarily want them on the LAN - any tips?

One of my sons has his iphone hooked up to my WiFi, all he had to do was enter the SSID and shared key.

On one occasion when I was viewing the DHCP table when he arrived, I knew it was him before he even came in through the back gate as the router had picked up his phone.

When someone talks about LAN, I understand that to mean Ethernet. Is this what you are referring to or did you mean a WiFi connection ?

I'm guess he means access to shared files and directories over the network. However you should protect these by setting up accounts and access rights, this will prevent anyone accessing them without authorisation.

It's all very well saying that you should secure servers on the LAN but that's not the request here. I'd like to be able to offer guests wifi but have them isoloated from the LAN, on a seperate network basically. I think Draytek offer this.

The Bipac 7800/N does not have this feature.

I know - that's what I'm saying it's a Feature Request. Frankly, this is a high end router - I'd say it'd make a very useful addition to the feature set.
