Sorry that things haven't worked out for you on this, but I still don't see why you should be out of pocket when something doesn't appear to be fit for purpose, but......?

If the Netgear is working fine then why don't you just stick with that ?

I can't really see any way to progress this as Billion's UK support can't recreate the issue & no-one else on the planet appears to have the same symptoms. Disappointingly, there appears to have been no report back from the parent company regarding the last one I returned either. It would be nice if Billion UK would accept that we're probably never going to get to the bottom of it & offer a refund.

As for the Netgear, it's wifi is a bit unstable with regular dips. It also is only 10/100 where I could do with gigabit. Perhaps I should buy a modem, switch & access point to do the task that this one should...?

As billion_fan has come across this before in relation to the ISP, why don't you PM him for some details so you would have something further to put to Billion Support ?

Hello. I'm new to this forum but have had my 7800N for about 3 months. As a reference point my setup is as follows:-
No ring wire
ADSL Nation XTE-2005 faceplate (although I have tried the Tamar and BT's I-Plate, little to choose between them as all work well).
1.06e Software on the 7800n
RouterStats monitoring software
SNR tweaked to circa 7db
Router is installed about 50cm from main BT socket using a Cat5E made RJ11 to RJ11 modem cable.
Overall improvement since all of the above changes was a stable 5 to 5.2 Mbs download speed from a sub 3Mbs. Upload is 0.6 to 0.7Mbs
Distance from exchange circa 1700m in a small Durham rural village called Shadforth so no chance of fibre or cable in near future :-)

Anyway, I bought the 7800N based on very good reviews and the ease of changing the SNR level. Upto yesterday morning I have been very pleased with the performance, to such a degree I bought the same router for my next door neighbour ( BT Home hub). As it tanspires, fortunately for me I had not installed it for him. So when my upload speed dropped to approx. zero accompanied by an SNR of 30db?? I rebooted my 7800N (as you do) and ended up with no ADSL link at all!! The router just failed to make a modem connection, period. After a second reboot the same so I unboxed the new 7800N, set it up the same as mine and I was back in business. I then decided to factory default my 7800N (paper clip job), reinstalled it and bingo it was working again. Re applied the same SNR settings etc and back to normal. Having left mine back on the network overnight then this morning no upload again. SNR back up to 30db over night see below.
SNR changes upsteam 1.jpg
In went the new 7800N and again the problem disappeared as you can see above - SNR back down to around 15db. However upstream SNR stats look a lot more variable than downstream see below.
Current SNR Upstream 29.02.2012.jpg
Current SNR Downstream 29.02.2012.jpg
I have ordered a cheap TD-W8960N to see how that performs - sort of a devils advocate. But its likely the original 7800N will be on its way back for sure!!
I also have a SNR tweaked Netgear DGN2000 which I may try again although, as per other users findings, the wireless side of Netgears is far from stable....will keep posting updates.

Interesting that we've both had no problems with Thomson.
I'm pretty convinced its the modem firmware at fault, and have a ticket open with Billion engineers and have sent a Wireshark capture. It seems fairly random and I managed to watch a HD TV stream successfully for an hour the other day. Hope they fix it, other people on other forums are beginning to notice it.

I've given up.

Billion UK kindly offered to swap my 7800N for a 7402NX. A broadly similar router with 3G support (no use to me) & a different chipset. Sadly, when it arrived the wifi was dog slow to the point of being unusable. When I power-cycled the router, the wifi disappeared completely as it had with the 7800N previously.

UK support have been largely as helpful as they can but I've long suspected that there's no real product-specific expertise in the UK & Taiwan don't really care.

Never did hear anything back after returning the 7402NX... :|

Just for the hell of it, I tried the 1.06f.dc1 firmware but no change.
