Question about DNS server setup

Hi, whilst setting up the router I have noticed several locations where static DNS servers can be entered...

Configuration - LAN - Ethernet

Configuration - WAN - WAN service

Advanced Setup - DNS


Could someone explain the differences/advantages between them all.

Advanced Setup - DNS - tell the routers WAN's interface to use the specified DNS servers

Configuration - WAN - WAN service - same as above

Configuration - LAN - Ethernet - bypass the router as a local DNS server, and offer the client a specified DNS sevrers (eg a PC connected to the router would normally obtain a DNS server which is the routers IP address, when you untick 'Use Router's setting as DNS Server' and specify your DNS servers, this will passed over to the client instead of the routers IP address as the DNS server

So if I want to change the DNS servers to use Google's or OpenDNS, I would have to use the Static option in both LAN and WAN configurations?
I have tried different combinations and it hasn't worked. I get Limited connection.
When the router tries to connect to the internet I get the error CHAP authentication fail. I'm not sure if it's something I'm configuring wrong or my ISP being funny.

Use the 'Advanced Setup >> DNS >> DNS' section, if you use the 'Advanced Setup' option it shouldn't drop your WAN.

If the router is reporting Authentication Fail, this is something to do with your username and password set within the WAN connection.

I'll give that a try.

I found it strange that it refused to authenticate as I hadn't changed anything regarding username or password.
I did notice that in ppp1.1 under PTM interface, there is a username and password, while in pppoa0 under ATM interface there is only the password.
I added the username there and applied, but it keeps disappearing.
There are so many settings and my knowledge is so limited!!

EDIT: changing the DNS servers in Advanced settings worked, thanks! I was a bit afraid of touching anything in Advanced

PTM Interface = VDSL/Fibre connection
ATM = ADSL connection

If the username keeps disappearing try using a different web browser to add the username. Or last resort reset the unit back to factory default settings, run through the quick start option, then change the DNS servers under 'Advanced Setup >> DNS >> DNS'

Ahh that makes sense (I'm on fibre).
It doesn't as to why it was failing to authenticate if nothing had changed though, but anyway, DNS now worked, so I'll leave it and make a backup.

You need to double check your authentication details with dnsomatic (maybe send them a email asking to confirm the hostname, username and password for your account)

If you have no luck, you can always try a free account with https://freedns.afraid.org/ and setup your router with a account from them
