Thanks ref the LLU. I wasn't sure that LLU operators offer G.DMT too? It's a shame that BT will only let LLU operators to give control of line stats on 21CN not 20CN as that would be a big factor in moving. I would just be happy on a fixed rate service at 2 meg but with my line stats BT would only offer 512kb fixed. No flexibility
I will take a look around and see what's there, I don't want to jump from the frying pan to the fire but I had been holding out for FTTC! Most of the other neighbours have moved off DSL onto 3G because of BT's decision to ignore us. There has been some dialogue with the top man (Ian Livingstone). He pointed out any company could use their poles and ducts but will not commit capital to do so and wants a reason why BT should do something uneconomic for us. He has a point, but it doesn't help.
Well, I thought that was a typical arrogant "Big Business" response - as long as we're getting your money - (sic) you'll only get as minimum a service as we can get away with to comply with the Trades Description Act.
When an ISP supplies up to ADSL 2+ (and as the 7800N defaults), you can set your router to just G.Dmt and I've sometimes done that for mine on TalkTalk when the line has been buggy.
If an ISP puts more down the line, then there should be more at the end of it after it degrades over the length of the line and you're right, you have to see what others have to offer or can provide before you jump ship and if you can find an alternative ISP, then I'm sure if you put the word out - others will follow suit and then you will see what BT's response to losing customers will be (and hope it will a positive one for you and the rest of your fellow sufferers).
