Hello,
I am hoping some can help\assist with PPTP VPN connection to my small office network.
My setup is as follows: 4 x Windows 7 client PC's and 1 x Windows SBS2011 all on a domain with IP range 192.168.2.0 to 192.168.2.254 . Server (DC,DHCP, AD, File, Print) is on a static IP 192.168.2.2 and clients on DHCP range 192.168.2.100 to 192.168.2.199 and the 7800N router on a 192.168.2.254 which is a default gateway for all the clients on the network (domain).
I want to configure the router so i can VPN to the network (file server) remotely. i've configured the PPTP section on the router as follows:
I've enabled a "Remote Access" 7800N; VPN client on outside of DHCP server managed range, starting IP range 192.168.2.200
I've defined a VPN connection to my 7800N public IP address and configured the PPTP VPN clients on a external computer which i want to use to connect back to the network.
I think i've configured VPN section on the router correctly becuase i am able to to connect far as to the router, as it varifies the username and password and then it tries to registers to computer to the network but then it fails.
I know that this is not complete configuration on the router\firewall and i think natting needs to be added? (NAT public IP to Internal IP?). As i am able to connect far as to the 7800N so the issues needs to be addressed now is from the router\firewall to the internal network. This is where i need help. i just want to connect to the internal file server so i can access the data which is on 192.168.2.2
Your help is apreciated.
Many thanks,
Jay

Re: 7800N - VPN PPTP - LAN DOMAIN
What IP address is your client side using, it must be different, so 7800N PPTP server is on 192.168.2.x so your client side should be something different eg 192.168.1.x
Also have you tried to change the 'Mode' to 'Stateless' ??

Hi thanks for your response.
The clients VPN start range is: 192.168.2.200
When you say 7800N PPTP server do you mean the 7800N router? i've not configured the internal network (domain) clients or server that is to do with the vpn.
Also is natting needs configuring?

No I mean your home network (client side), make sure it is on a different range eg 192.168.1.x

Clients are definitely on a different range. Do you know if NAT is required from the public ip to the internal server?

If your PPTP is hosted on your Windows SBS2011 then you need to port forward port 1723 to get past the NAT. (via virtual server option on the router) If you are in no NAT mode, then port forwarding is no required as you should be fully exposed to the internet.
If you have configured the 7800N as your PPTP server, please make sure you disable the the PPTP server on the Windows SBS2011, so ensure you do not get conflicts.

Have you set static IP's in the client VPN connection? In Windows you can define a static IP for your VPN tunnel or obtain the IP address automatically from the VPN server?
Also have you checked the systemlog of your 7800N to see if any errors are listed there?
