DHCP Issue Homeplug/Gigaswitch

Post by cecemf »

I have some routing issues with the 7800n I hope someone can assist with.

I have a iMac connected to the 7800n via ethernet and it works fine, all wifi device works too and a NAS plug in straight to N7800 works too on a fixed IP (192.168.1.200), all the rest on DHCP
The issue I have with is with my TV it's connected like this :

Smart TV > TP-LINK gigabit > Home Plug (pair) > BiPac N7800

My setup didn't change and before I had a TP-LINK modem router and it rocked fine it stopped working since replaced it with N7800

the light of the ethernet port were the home plug is plugged it's showing orange and that my TV detect the wired connection but can't get the DHCP settings, tried with PS3 and Boxee Box and all the same

It seems your homeplug is connecting at 100mbps, hence the orange LAN light indicates that.

If you cannot get a connectivity via your homeplugs, I would suggest resetting them.

It seems the issue is with the homeplugs, have you tried another enternet port the 7800N?? Maybe the EWAN port if not in use

Didn't know I could use the ewan port will try it out, tried the other port and it's the same, same issue with my iMac it's showing 100mbts when the cable is Cat6 and orange led :(

Another test try plugging your TP-Link Giga Switch to the 7800N this should verify the issue, you should see a Green ethernet light once connected at 1000mbps

Great idea will check that out once I get home tonight, but if the iMac being plugged directly to the Billion doesn't work then the gigabit switch wouldn't make a difference, strange issue that is couldn't find anything wrong in the settings of the billion

The billion normally auto detects the speed, so if a 1000mpbs connection is detected the light should turn 'Green' there is nothing in within the web interface to select the conneciton speeds for LAN connections

Do you think that could be a fault from the Billion ? plugged back my old Modem gigabit TP-Link and all my network was back on gigabits so it does seem to be a problem from the Billion not the cables of the set up. I brought this product thinking I would get quality and I'm very disappointing so far at least for a £125 product my £50 TP-Link seems to be doing better !

It could be a LAN failure, but normally its only 1 or 2 ports that are effected, out of the 4 ports, one port must be able to connect at 1000mbps.

I find that my 7800n is extremely fussy with Cat 5E cables. Some of the ones I've tried have no problems providing gigabit links on other equipment (including a TP-Link gigabit switch!), but as soon as they're plugged into the 7800n, I only get 100Mbps.
After recrimping/testing/tearing my hair out for a while, I caved in and bought some pre-made Cat 6 cables and they worked flawlessly from the start...

Not an ideal solution, but it worked for me and was preferable to sending the otherwise fantastic router back...
