Setting up a VPN on a 7800N

Hi all

I replaced an old Draytek router with the Billion 7800N. I used to use the Draytek to pass through a VPN to the PC attached to the Draytek (so I could access the PC when travelling).

However, although the Billion router set-up menus include some relating to VPN, there's no guidance on how to go about setting up the VPN (the manual doesn't have a section).

I have a static IP address with my ISP, and I've set up the PC as 192.168.1.222 on my local network attached to the Billion.

Any suggestions as to how I set up the modem ?

I have setup a PPTP connection on my 7800N and have dialed in using a Win7 machine.

I have attached 2 screen captures of my settings. To help guide you.

If using a mac (apple) to dial in to the PPTP please change the Peer Encryption mode is 'Stateless'

Once dialed in you should be able to ping the 7800N ip address, to let you know the link is up and running.

I forgot to mention if your computer is hosting the VPN (PPTP) all you should need to do is port forwarding.

Follow the attached screen shot, showing my setup. 'Advanced >> Configuration >> Virtaul Server >> Port Mapping'

The previous screen captures are for dialing into the 7800N without needing to leave a computer on, so can access another device on your network eg NAS, CCTV etc.

I set up port forwarding as you suggested. At first I had no success, but I began to smell a rat.

I turned off Norton firewall, and got a connection straightaway. I turned the firewall back on, and no connection possible.

I've therefore turned on Windows Firewall and disabled Norton's firewall. All seems to be working OK.

A quick google suggests that I'm not the only one to hit problems with Norton and incoming VPN connections. I've been through various menus and suggestions but can't seem to activate or open just one port (1732) or enable one protocol (PPTP). Does anyone else where in Norton Internet Security 2011 I'll find the right menu or screen to enable incoming VPNs ?

Seems to be a known problem with Norton

It must be a issue of just adding a rule to open the correct port, but how it is done, I don't know as I don't use Norton, haven't for ages as I think it uses to much resources on my comp.

Running a program from a network drive over VPN? Hi all, Here at work we all access an application that is stored on the Windows Server. We open it via navigating to the shared folder available in network places and simply double clicking the exe. Now I was wondering if I VPN into the server would I still be able to run the application like the LAN users do?

I've managed to solve the issue by accident but have no idea why this works, as it does not make any sense to me. Just to be clear I'm using the built in PPTP/L2TP connectivity in windows xp (no external client program) and I couldn't make the initial connection at all to the remote server.
I managed to connect to the vpn server on another pc also running NIS 2011 and it worked. The only differences between the 2 setups were that on the "working pc":
- NIS smart firewall set to auto program control (manual on the non working pc)
- windows explorer allowed to access the internet (blocked on the non worling pc)
So once I deleted the windows explorer rule in the non working pc and set it to auto program control, it worked! I then changed it back to manual mode and it's still ok! So it appears that for windows xp pptp/l2tp to work, it seems that windows explorer needs to have full internet access (either that or I've missed something!)
But thanks again and hope this helps someone else!
PS, in relation to settng up a new firewall rule to allow PPTP traffic, simply opening port 1723 does not work - all traffic needs to be allowed - perhaps Symantec can add in additional protocols (ie 47) to the rule options in a future release.

Hi,

I have followed your instruction, I am using a Mac and a billion router to set up PPTP using a IP address in the US (i have tried several) from the VPN list my username and password added. I am getting a problem reported from the billion router LCP terminated by peer (MPPE required but peer refused) it appears back from the VPN servers IP address.
Can any one shed some light onto the possible reason that this is occurring?

Hi

On the PPTP client page on the 7800N try and change the Auth. Type to 'MS-CHAPv2' and attempt to dial out again.
