What is a non WDS AP/Router. This is referred to in the link you provided. I am new to all this so apologies for all the questions
Yes you can configure the device with the same SSID, I would also recommend matching the wireless security type and password.

The setup guide refers to routers that do not support WDS (eg BT HomeHub), (our 7800DXL does support WDS, but the AP Client setup is easier to setup, there is no need to enter MAC addresses etc)

I am having difficulty in setting up the 3100sn. When I connect the 3100sn to the router the router disconnects soon after opening http://192.168.1.253 and I am unable to progress with the configuration. Very frustrating. Any advice?

Then plug your PC directly to the Bipac 3100SN, setup a static IP on your computer in the same range eg 192.168.1.5, 255.255.255.0 then login to the device on http://192.168.1.253, and setup AP Client mode or WDS mode

Thanks for your reply and patience. Once again forgive my ignorance but how do I setup a static IP on my computer in the same range?
