my instant answer was going to 'not for years' but I had a hunt around and sure enough, behind a cupboard and contributing little to anyone's quality of life... and old D-Link router, formerly re-purposed as as a switch STILL PLUGGED INTO THE MAINS!

I've tried now with it on and with it off and it seems that was the source of the trouble
I'll keep an eye on things and let you know if I have any more problems
