Hi

I'm using the Billion 7800N with NAT and it works fine in loopback, not sure what I have done to make this work however, it is just using the normal firmware.

So I can use my domain name internally which resolves to my external IP address, which seems to loop back just fine as I can access my own website from the external IP address. A trace route shows it reaching my external IP address from my internal network with no hops.

You say normal firmware ? Is this the newest 1.06g version that came out in April/May 2012 ??

The reason is I am waiting for my 7800N to arrive and really need to be able to access my DynDNS address from local LAN computers aswell as from the WAN , and DO NOT want to do this via IP address from local network. So need to know which Firmware is best to use .

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest using firmware UKBillion_7800NV6_1.06e.dc1_20111114.rar

Not really sure why f/w updates were issued that lessened the capabilities of the router or did the "NAT Loopback" capability cause a conflict with the other "improvements" to the software and so was disabled ?

Nat loopback was removed from all future firmware as it causes issues with UPNP functions

Thanks for the fast answer " billion_fan " , looks like I need to use the 1.06e firmware once it arrives.

Just hope it is on an older firmware than this when I check or can I go forward and back with the firmware ? I understand I am best to go to a factory restore aswell after any firmware updates ,which is not a problem as I'll probably set this up on a LAN cable to my lappy before I even plug in the ADSL. So I won't really have changed much

Strange that NAT LOOPBACK should affect UPnP , wish they had given us a choice to turn on/off with a tick box instead of assuming no-one wanted it more than UPnP or were prepared to live with the incompatability issue, to be able to have it.

Another question ( as you seem knowledgeable on these 7800N's ) is , if I stay with the older firmware do I miss out on the newer wireless driver that is supposed to be in 1.06g , or is it more a security thing than a performance/compatability update ?

Yes you can downgrade/upgrade the firmware as you wish, we don't lock down our products like apple.

Yes you will have reset back to factory default settings once the firmware is upgraded/downgraded

There are no major changes between firmware 1.06e and 1.06g other then a wireless driver improvement, so you aren't missing much.

The only reason we improved the wireless driver was so we can make the device is compatible in WDS mode with the 7700N.

It's great to have someone like you who seems to know the ins and outs of a 7800N , well WDS doesn't interest me , I prefer to set extra routers and wireless repeaters up manually on my Network at home ,and this is the bit that also puts me off

WDS may also be considered a repeater mode because it appears to bridge and accept wireless clients at the same time (unlike traditional bridging). However, with this method, throughput is halved for all clients connected wirelessly.

So no real loss missing out on that function.

Will let you know how the NAT goes once I have it up and running.

Thanks " billion_fan " for ALL your knowledgeable help you should have a pat on the back.

NAT Loopback works impecably , all that's needed after running 1.06e , is to go ADVANCED in the web gui and go to Configuration / Virtual server and add the ports , for me it was 21 and 80 for my ftp and http and the respective IP addresses for my NAS boxes that are on fixed IP addresses, obviously I had to input the details for Dyndns ( Configuration / Advanced ) but that was it , I can now check that Dyndns is working from inside my Network at home without having to do it with my Mobile phone and using up slow / expensive data

This router is absolutely fantastic ,I cannot believe the improvement it has had for me.

I have spent 6 months with 500 / 900 kb/s sync speeds, I am 5.6km from my local exchange and kept experiencing line drops ( 20-50 ) per hour on a bad day and my SNR was up and down like crazy ( 4-12 db ) , this equated to 4 or 5 line re-syncs per day , and pings that would reach 5 secs !! ( using Router-stats lite )

However since I have setup the Billion with Phyr on both up/down , wow , 2300kb/s sync speed and Download through put at 2000kb/s SNR steady at 6.8 db and pings at 40-50 ms. This router is AMAZING , I compare it to Netgear DG834 v4 / Orange Brightbox and Dlink from AOL , these are all quite good normally especially the Netgear ( At one point the BEST router for long lines ). I have yet to play with the SNR and tweak it a bit , but I am waiting for a week for it to settle before playing.

Can you answer me the difference between :

Configuration /DHCP server /Fixed Host and Configuration / Advanced / Static ARP .

I was not sure so I filled both out with the respective pieces of kit that I have connected on my Network that have fixed IP addresses ( 15 in total ) , all seems to work perfectly and my Network of 2 routers ,1 repeater,3 NAS boxes ,2 Gigabit switches and various PC's with XP/7/Linux , all work and talk for the first time in ages

DHCP Server - In the LAN site, the DHCP server can allocate a range of client IP addresses and distribute them including IP address, subnet mask as well as DNS IP address to local computers. It provides an easy way to manage the local IP network.

Fixed Host - Set a MAC address and IP address (outside the DHCP range) and router will automatically assign the same IP address to the device everytime the device is turned on (good feature to use when port forwarding)

Static ARP - This feature allows you to map the layer-2 MAC (Media Access Control) address that corresponds to the layer-3 IP address of the device.
