Also did you try a reset back to factory default settings?? Maybe worth a try before returning the unit.

Also if possible can you try the 7800N on a different ADSL line??

If all fails return the unit back to play for a new replacement

I think play.com has a bad batch. My friend bought his from there and it had a faulty wi-fi module (dislodged maybe?). He then returned it and bought it from dabs.
Bought mine the same day as his from dabs too. No problem from either of us.

Then again your problem might be completely unrelated.

If the 2 wire's ADSL cable router end is a RJ11 then use this to connect the 7800N to the master socket unless you didn't bother using each router's cable when changing over.

I don't know what a 2 wire is.

Although the 7800N's cable will not be degraded, the connections could be dry jointing or just badly connected and causing a high resistance, which could account for the extreme difference in the Downstream Attens.

The length of the cable between you and the exchange (because of the increased resistance) determines your max speed and a cable fault like this would assimulate the effects of a very high Downstream Attenuation.

Just been having a browse through Kitz's site and came across an article explaining the 63.5dB downstream attenuation.

Apparently, it's from the old G.922.1 standard...."The attenuation ranges from 0 to 63.5dB with 0.5dB steps"

Router manufacturers took this to be the max and set their f/w to this whereas when the router displays this value, it could be much higher.

Using Kitz's speed calculator http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/max_speed_calc.php I entered 63 (it only takes whole numbers) and you will see for yourself that it will produce a much greater speed than you are recording in your speed tests and the calculations it gives, are on the conservative side.

Given the very low speeds you are getting with the 7800N would tend to support my theory of a very high resistance. It could be the cable or in the router but after you have checked out the cable bit, we'll know which bit it's more likely to be.

Hi Guys, thanks all for your responses, I didn't notice the was a second page until just now :-) Duh! moment there.

Unfortunately since last night, I have not been so lucky. After trying different settings quite a few times, my dload speed has stayed a ridiculously low 16k even though I'm synced at 4544k (I hate BT's automated exchange technology)

Yes, I did reset to factory settings, a few times infact, when I first tried it, then both times after upgrading the firmware.

Unfortunately, no I can't try on a different ADSL connection.

As far as the cable goes, it's just the RJ11 to the master socket (via a filter of course) that came with the Router, I did however switch them over to the one I was using previously just to try, but still no joy :-(

Tomken, I like the idea of it potentially being high resistance in one of the router components, I've eliminated the cables as being to blame. I have re-synced at 4544k at the moment on my 2wire 2700hgv router, I even tried my old Netgear DG834 V2 which synced at 4100, which is slightly better than it ever used to.

Is there any way that it could be just because the technology I have always used is old, and the new stuff just aint compatible? I mean everywhere I looked, even people on DSLMAX like me, were raving about this router, because it was great for long lines and people living out in the sticks.

I really want this router to work, but it just seems so out there, that it's maybe faulty.

Thanks guys, what a great forum :-)

As you've eliminated everything else and we know your connection works, then it definitely looks like it's time for a RMA.

Certainly does seem like a faulty router that needs returning. A while ago quite a few people had iffy 7800ns from Amazon so they maybe some bad batches around.

I'd opt for a refund from Play if possible & go to Dabs or Broadbandbuyer perhaps.

Is the security seal broken on the router?

A few months back people were getting what they thought were new devices but the seals were broken, have a good look at it.

I don't want to upset you but I think Play customer support could do with improving.

Yeah, I'm starting to come round to the idea that it's just plain broke!
As far as the security seal goes, I assume it's somewhere hard to get to, cos I cant see one.
Anyway, I contacted Play the other day to arrange for a return and went straight on to Dabs, to check availability, and they have some, so YAY!!!!

As for Plays customer support, well, you'll get no arguments from me, when I arranged for the router to be sent back, I got an e-mail saying it would be collected by courier free of charge. Yesterday, I got another E-Mail, saying I was to send it back myself, and I would be refunded no more than £1.40 for postage!!!! If it came to more, I had to send them a Post Office receipt for the extra amount!

I of course immediately phoned Play, all ready to start shouting abusive things at whoever was unfortunate enough to answer the phone, however the person I spoke to said before I even finished my first sentence, that she knew what I was going to say, and I didn't need to worry. Apparently a bunch of new people had been put in their returns dept, and had sent these e-mails out to everyone that had arrranged a return, regardless what item was being sent back!!!

Anyway Guys, Thanks so much for all your advice, I really was ready to give up and settle for a sub-standard network setup. Now with confidence, as soon as Play refunds me, I will be straight on to Dabs to order a new one :D

Regards to all,

Grim.

The seal is a round sticker on the back near the ports.

It say's if broken waranty is void.
