The laptop is on 192.168.1.106 and there is nothing else in the DHCP log on 192.168.1.109. As far as I know there's no static IPs set on this router.

I'll run that program now, windows troubleshooter simply "detects problems with network connectivity" and assumes my router can't connect to the internet.

The last time I had a similar problem I'd just installed a new firewall. Because I'd uninstalled a different one the Windows Firewall had been activated & installing the new one didn't deactivate the Windows one & I had a severe clash. This was Win 7 btw.

Out put from MiniToolBox, not sure what SM Bus Controller is, as I didn't see it there earlier! I've reinstalled motherboard LAN drivers to check it wasn't directly to do with that but haven't gone through all the rest. I also just installed a wifi card from my old PC, so that's the disabled Belkin card. This is working fine when it's enabled, I might add, although I would still prefer ethernet in this old stone house!

You could try assigning the desktop with a static IP address to see if it helps, but the SM Bus Controller is part of your motherboard's chipset, so you'll need to go to your mobo or pc vendor's support site and download that.

You'll need to save and copy these over, but with so many services terminating unexpectedly, I'm wondering if the pc could be infected.

This is how to run Windows Defender Offline http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/wind ... er-offline and/or you could manually run MS's Malicious Malware Removal Tool by from Start > type mrt > Enter then follow the prompts.

There's a link in the MRT before you run it which will tell which malware it scans for.

After you have done the anti-malware scans and if you have an OS install disk, boot up with that into Safe Mode with Cmd Prompt and type sfc /scannow > Enter or use the Repair my Computer/Startup Repair and let it run through all of the files (about 30mins) or you could opt for the Restore to an Earlier time where it will search and hopefully find one where the svchost.exe wasn't corrupt, but I think letting it run through all of the files is the better of those two options.

If you don't have an install disk then just boot up into Safe Mode with Cmd Prompt and run the sfc /scannow and if you run this, then let us know what it has reported.

I'll run that and Kaspersky now. I've had a few crashes and blue screens recently but always with different error codes, usually related to driver problems. Just haven't got around to doing anything about it yet other than what's suggested by Windows on startup. I suppose this would be a good opportunity though :p It'll take a few hours so I'll let you know the result later.

I've been treating this as a total no-connect and had forgotten that you can connect when you hook up to the laptop.

With this in mind, then you could do a much thorough anti-malware scan with Eset's free online scanner http://www.eset.com/home/products/onlin ... tr=3917268 which can take a couple of hours or so when you tick all of the boxes, as well as being able to directly download the chipset drivers etc. (which you are probably already utilising :) )

Re, the BSODs - do you still have a Restore Point that you can revert to prior to them occurring ?

Sorry for taking so long to reply. Now the wireless is working, fixing the problem has taken a bit of a back seat to work :)

I reinstalled all the appropriate mobo drivers and haven't had any bsod issues and the warning in device manager has disappeared. I'm guessing windows update broke something :) I also ran the malicious software toolkit with no responses. I haven't done the others but I really think it's unlikely a virus (etc) is causing this issue.

As I see it, when I connect to my laptop using ICS, the laptop is effectively acting as the router and my desktop has no problems connecting to it. However when I connect directly to the 7800N I have problems, so the issue is more than likely due to the router. I suspect doing a reset to factory on the router would fix the issue but that's not really an option. I'm happy to chalk this issue up to a mystery for now, but if there are any more suggestions I am happy to try them when I have time.

Thanks for all your help! Jamie

I agree it's a puzzler :)

The static IP address I was suggesting would be set up in the computer rather than that of a reserved IP address in the router and is set where you changed the DNS servers and you can get the Subnet Mask from the ipconfig /all.

This would be set to an IP address outside of the router's DHCP pool.

I don't know if you're still following this thread or not, but I've had a similar faulting error in my Last 10 Error Events relating to iphlpsvc and while this is for the IP Helper which is more to do with IPv6 Teredo Tunneling, when stopped, can cause other what seem like unrelated other problems and I was wondering if this could resolve your connectivity problem.

My Tale - This manifested itself on boot up with no Internet connection and the Windows WiFi Diagnostics initially failing to run with the error pop-up message that it couldn't start because the IP Helper failed to run.

From Start > went into services.msc and attempted to manually start IP Helper just to get the error message that the file couldn't be found and a sfc /scannow was useless.

I was contemplating a reinstall but Googled ip helper file missing in win7 and came across this article http://www.sevenforums.com/network-shar ... ter-2.html which helped me locate iphlsvc.dll - C:\\WINDOWS\System32\iphlpsvc.dll - it's well down in the list to where you would expect to see it and while it was there and the cmd sc start iphlpsvc failed to start it, I figured it could be corrupt and used the link on Page 2/Post#12 of the article to download and merge the registry file - having created a Restore Point first.

On rebooting to ensure the reg change took effect, from having an Internet connection before the reboot - I no longer had one and Windows Diagnostics suggested rebooting the router - which I skipped and then it came up with that I should wire up.

Did that and the red cross in the system tray immediately turned to 5 bars.

There's no guarantee that this will resolve for you but as you can use your laptop as an AP for the desktop, then there can't be a lot wrong with it and it may just be down to this file being corrupt.

I don't know what could have caused this on my laptop as it has always been virus free, but it would seem to be not an uncommon event.
