Is it possible i can configer the router so that that in intself acts as a VPN or is it a case of buying one in which case who do you use and ideally best tips for use on fire box.

Our 8800NL does not have a onboard VPN server so you won't be able to setup the VPN tunnel on the device

I've used a couple of methods on my network, both of which were fine. My first VPN was based on a dedicated Raspberry Pi, using the PiVPN implementation of OpenVPN. This worked perfectly for a couple of years, then I bought a Synology NAS, which was capable of hosting OpenVPN too. The Raspberry Pi route is better, as it's easier to modify the configuration to suit your needs, whereas the embedded Synology route is designed to be simple, with limited configuration allowed (unless you are happy SSH'ing into your NAS, and hand modifying config files).

The URL for PiVPN is: http://www.pivpn.io/, just follow the simple instructions, and you'll be up and running in no time :-)
