Is using DMZ a good idea?

Hi Guys
I am currently playing Payday 2 Beta on Steam, for 3 days I could never connect to the game, their support basically (and correctly) said it was something my end, so I did the port forwarding on UDP ports for steam p2p play, but still no joy...
Then I put the computer into DMZ mode and the game worked perfectly, however reading around there seems to be conflicting information of the "is it a good idea" to do this...
I do understand I have effectively opened up all my ports to attacks, but I would of presumed port forwarding would of worked, but alas no
I obviously have windows firewall running, so my question is really, I am exposing myself to a real risk?
