Can finally get Fibre - will the 7800N Work?
Hi - I've just noticed that my exchange is now accepting orders for UK fibre broadband. I have had a 7800N for a while now and love this piece of kit. I have noticed that there is a thread on Sky fibre broadband - without reading the numerous pages (yet) - I take it that the 7800N will work with Sky Fibre?
Also - is it just with Sky that the 7800N needs a bit of reconfiguration? Is it compatible with other providers of fibre such as BT, TalkTalk, Zen etc?

Yes it is compatible. The 7800N will have to be plugged up to the 'Open Reach Modem' for a setup with all the mentioned ISP's.bathingape wrote:Hi - I've just noticed that my exchange is now accepting orders for UK fibre broadband. With Sky Fibre we will need to extract your current username and password from the existing sky router (older sky routers not the newer sky VDSL modem/router) and set the the 7800N to EWAN mode, protocol 'Obtain a IP address automatically' and enter your sky username/password in the 'Client ID' section with a | in between eg skyusername|password
With BT (older BT modem setup not the new BT home Hub 5 which is VDSL modem/router)/Zen, again setup the 7800N to EWAN and protocol to 'PPPOE' and enter your broadband username and password in the sections provided
With talktalk home, set the 7800N to EWAN and protocol to 'Obtain a IP address automatically'
I hope this helps

great reply thanks.
I know you mention that we can extract the username and password from the older sky router - I guess we can do the same from the new router they will provide me seeing that I am not an existing sky customer?

It depends becuase the new sky modem/router they provide to you will need to be used, before they sent out two bits of kit, a modem and a router, and you can extract the username and password from the router, and the 7800N would connect to the modem, but now they have introduced a modem/router in one, so the 7800N would not be able to dial into the modem/router as it working as modem/router and not a modem. If the sky fibre modem/router has a modem only mode then it will workbathingape wrote:great reply thanks.

Thanks. It looks like it's this thing here that they send out now:billion_fan wrote:It depends becuase the new sky modem/router they provide to you will need to be used, before they sent out two bits of kit, a modem and a router, and you can extract the username and password from the router, and the 7800N would connect to the modem, but now they have introduced a modem/router in one, so the 7800N would not be able to dial into the modem/router as it working as modem/router and not a modem. Hopefully someone on here can confirm that the 7800N works with this?

The only option is to let the Sky modem/router assign a internal IP to the 7800N EWAN, then DMZ this IP (the internal IP the 7800N shows on the status page for the WAN connection) within the Sky boxbathingape wrote:Thanks. You will be behind double NAT, but the DMZ rule should allow the traffic throughbathingape wrote:are there any drawbacks to this method mate?

Re: Can finally get Fibre - will the 7800N Work?
ah ok thanks so it looks like another option would be to buy another VDSL modem i'm guessing? I'm just learning when it comes to fibre as it's only just been made available in the past day or so. Do these modems have better features than others or is their job solely to just provide a connection to the internet? Am I able to purchase a BT Openreach VDSL modem from ebay or something? Sorry for the questions!

They don't have any features they are just dumb modems
The only issue might be extracting the sky username and password from the new Sky modem/router, but you can refer to the skyuser forums for advise on that
