7800n and BT TAP3 test

I am having ongoing problems with FTTC speeds due, in the main, to line length from the cabinet. Plusnet/BTW/Openreach have asked me to run the TAP3 test option on the BTW speedtest site/Further Diagnostics, as I am currently getting speeds lower than my profile..
I have tried several times over the last three days but am unable to complete the test - it only gets as far as "can't find the server at test3.speedtest.btwholesale.com".
I have been applying the instructions on the speedtest site for Win7 to my connection via the 2800n ie go into config>WAN>change username to 'speedtest@speedtest_domain' and delete the password; I have also tried to achieve this by also going into Quick start>continue>change username to 'speedtest@speedtest_domain' and delete the password.
Has anyone carried out a successful TAP3 test via a 2800n - if so did you use different approach or settings to the above?
Grateful for any feedback.

Try setting your PC up with a PPPOE connection, directly connected to the open reach modem, so the Billion is out of the equation, then diagnose further

Here are my notes, I have a 7800N running 1.06h
I am on an 21CN ADSL connection, FTTC is due June 2014.
Had the same problem until I set the DNS to Automatic.
Password does not seem to matter.
1.
http://www.speedtest.btwholesale.com
2. Run first stage then second stage (Further diagnostics).
3. Login to router and change the (DSL) Username to speedtest@speedtest_domain, password does not matter.
4. Set the DNS to Automatic
5. Reboot the router
6. Run the third stage of the test
7. Login to router and change the (DSL) Username & password to their normal values.
8. Set the DNS back to 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4 or your choice of DNS servers
9. Reboot the Router

A good idea but unfortunately bypassing the Billion still results in "can't find the server at test3.speedtest.btwholesale.com"

Many thanks for your notes but still no connection. This is the Billion connection setup I have been using -
Main port EWAN
Protocol PPPoE
Username speedtest@speedtest_domain
Password
Auth Protocol Auto
IP address 0.0.0.0
Obtain DNS Automatically Enabled

Only thing I can think of is to reboot the router after changing the username and double check that it has changed correctly.

If you are bypassing the Billion, then you should let your BT know this, and inform them you still are unable to test your line with 'test3.speedtest.btwholesale.com' when connected directly to the Open Reach Modem. (PPPOE dial in mode)

Thats great, at least when asked you can say you have tested using BT Only equipment and was still having issues.
I hope everything gets sorted
