My isp is talktalk
weekdays most of the time the speed is good from early morning to 4 or 5 pm then it will go slow untill midnight. This weekend has been slow all the time, the thing is that the speed will probably get better tonight.

Is this just down to talktalk?

I did try PhyR and snr but could not stay connected

The phone cable from bt socket to router is long should i try moving router closer to bt socket

Follow the advice given in that thread regarding the tests, create your own thread on the TT forum and post your results not forgetting to fill out the stickies.

If there is anything you want to add after your first post and before an OCE responds, just edit your original post so you don't bump youself to the back of the queue. You can also lock your thread using the Tools to prevent any unwanted (if well meaning) suggestions which will have the same effect if you added your own posts instead of editing your original.

It's just down to congestion.

The service you're on is BT's IpStream where the ISP buys a limited amount of bandwidth from BT and at peak times this is just not enough to support those using it.

Making a few changes internally , like removing the bell wire , will improve your sync speed slightly but not get around the congestion.

Other than switch ISPs to one with their own equipment in your exchange (LLU) there's nothing you can do.

I also found that enabling PhyR gave me stability problems as it kept the SNRM too low and at the time (and as now) my SNRM tends to drop down a fair bit, but I would have thought that tweaking your SNRM down to about 6dB wouldn't have caused you any problems.

I'm with TalkTalk on LLU with a Downstream Attenuation of 49dB and mine is syncing at 6523 to give a throughput of 5.5ish. Following the Christmas drop in speed(possibly due to congestion) and a planned power cut, it resync'd at 6869 but that only lasted for about 4 days which didn't surprise me and following a couple of Internet losses, it's settled at the 6523 and been stable in excess of 9 days with fingers crossed.

The table of values to enter for adjusting the SNRM can be found at http://www.spaldwick.com/broadband/billion-7800n

I would suggest using the value of 75 first which will reduce it by 1.5dB to see if it remains stable, then using 50 to drop it by 3dB from your original 9 - 11dB profile.

You will notice from the table that regardless of the original SNRM, each value will reduce by a set given amount so there are plenty of options but you will have to take into account your ISP's line management (DLM), that if you drop it too low and persist with that tweak and it causes disconnects, then it will auto increase your SNRM to higher than your original to compensate in order to stabalise your connection.

When you're on LLU you can request the DLM be disabled but as you are on Ipstream, I'm not sure if BT's SRA would be the line management, you would have to either enquire via telephony CS or post a thread on TT's forum.

The distance cablewise from the exchange is calculated by dividing the Downsteam Attenuation by 13.81 so your's works out at approx 3.4kms.

The only advantage of experimenting with the MTU is if browsing gets laggy on max throughput because of the number of packet resends (FECs) whereas if it gets laggy due to contention or noise on the line, then adjusting the MTU wouldn't have much of an effect. I have mine set to 1392 and using Open DNS primary (208.67.222.222) as my primary and Google's primary (8.8.8.8) as my secondary as a belt and braces. TalkTalk's DNS isn't particulary well thought of.

Don't bother tweaking the SNRM , your speed is controlled by the profile you're on , namely 5150kbps. For your attenuation that's about right.
