IPSEC VPN

I've just purchased a 7800DX and I'm in the process of migrating from a Draytek 2800 to the 7800DX. The configuration includes a number of VPN connections to customer sites.
I had one problem where the preshared key was too long for the 7800DX to handle in that case I controlled both VPN's so just truncated the preshared key.
On a second VPN the preshared key contains punctuation characters, specifically > and : I get the message "Pre-Shared Key : Invalid",
Before I go back to the customer and ask them to change the Pre-Shared key is there any way to escape the invalid characters, or specify the whole string hexencoded, or alternatively bypass the gui altogether and edit the ipsec.secrets ?
