Website lag with 8800AXL (BT HH5 is better!)

Hi folks.

Plumped for the 8800AXL after many years with the utterly excellent 7800.

Now - I was getting sick of the HH5 dropping connection at any time it wanted. Order the 8800AXL and honestly, I wish I didn't bother. So I am hoping for a little help here from the pros.

8800AXL has 1 main issue, and 1 slight niggle. The slight niggle is the WiFi ability, but looking online there is nothing to be done as it's seen as a bit of a dog by users online for WiFi. But - we got WiFi in all rooms so not overly fussed.

1 major issue though, Websites hanging.

I noticed this as soon as it got plugged in. Main culprits are Facebook, Google, YouTube and Google Maps. Google maps, specifically is unusable. Switch to HH5 - everything is peachy.

Anyone with any ideas? The issues are happening on Chrome and IE11. I am back on HH5 now till I try getting this sorted - but the 8800AXL is less than 2 months old :/ Got it around 18th March.

I really feel like it's been a complete waste of coin. HELP!!! :) (BT Infinity 2 btw)

Hmm, what MTU do you have set in the router?

I saw that post mate and it does have me thinking - I'll wire it back up tomorrow and go a snooping.

Also try switching DNS servers to see if that helps

Any recommendations for alternate DNS servers?

OK folks...

1492 was the setting it was on, changed it to 1450 and at first I thought it had made a difference. Appears not.

It's sporadic too - one minute it's all fine - then massive website hangs.

I'm happy to try the DNS thing also, but you'll need to talk me through that a little lol.

try putting 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 in Configuration > LAN Primary DNS server and Secondary DNS server, and deselect Use Router's setting as DNS Server

Also put the MTU back to 1492 in the router, then open a command prompt and type in the following command

Code: Select all

ping http://www.google.com -f -l 1464
and hit the Enter key

and again with

Code: Select all

ping http://www.google.com -f -l 1465
you should get something like this for the first command...

Reply from 216.58.210.36: bytes=64 (sent 1464) time=11ms TTL=58

and something like this for the second...

Packet need to be fragmented but DF set

One other thing...
Do you get the same hang when opening websites from all devices, or are you only testing one PC?
it could be your PC settings at fault.

Afraid not - I get "ping request could not find host http://www.google.com. Please check the name and try again.
