7800N stopped connecting to WAN

I recently upgraded my 7800N to the 1.06f.dc1 firmware but didn't restart the router from factory settings, thinking that shouldn't make any difference. But then a month later when I was away from home for a few weeks, the router suddenly disconnected and couldn't reconnnect to my ADSL service. Sods Law at it's finest as my wife couldn't surf the web and I had my spare router tucked away somewhere she couldn't get to.

I sorted out the problem but it required a factory reset and I had to reconfigure the router from scratch.

But I was wondering:

1. Would the fact that I didn't restart the router from factory settings have caused the router to eventually lose and fail to reconnect to my ADSL WAN?
2. The SNR reported in the ADSL status has decreased from over 3 to 2.3 and my downstream speeds increased from 6Mbps to over 7 Mbps - would this change in donwstream SNR indicate that the ADSL line may have become unstable and hence the router failed to reconnect?
3. Regarding saved config files, if I edit a config file to only include the settings that I want to change from the default, can I load that config file to effect only those config settings contained in the file or will loading the edited config file cause problems or stability issues?

Thanks in advance.

To answer Q1, I don't have a difinitive answer, but it's possible it could have caused some sort of conflict but when I first upgraded c to d, I reset mine to current instead of factory, but rectified that straight away when I realised so I didn't get to know if it would have any long term after effects.

Not sure what you mean in Q2 regarding ADSL status decreasing from over 3 to 2.3 and for Q3, whenever you make any changes to the config then Save Config, that is the config the router will work off.

If you want different configs to work with (for whatever reason), once you have created the basic config and saved it, back it up and the same for any subsequent changes.

Each config you back up will auto increment so when you go to wherever they're are saved on your PC, then (providing you've recorded which is for what) you can simply restore the router to the applicable config and this is useful for when you may have to factory reset the router because of connectivity issues etc and will save you from having to enter all the details again from scratch.

The SNR margin is a figure that the router determines from my telephone line and displays in the ADSL status page - it's not something set in the standard router config pages. What I was getting at was that perhaps the varying SNR figure was an indication of my ADLS service gradually becoming less and less stable until it crapped out, requiring a factory reset of the 7800N which may have also caused my ADSL line to have been reset? The SNR figure is now reported as 3.7 by the 7800N's ADSL status page.
