8800AXL DNS Proxy - degraded function compared to 7800N?

I just installed an 8800AXL to replace a 3-year old 7800N which had started rebooting several times a day.
I had chosen the Billion 7800N because of its DNS Proxy feature (Use Router as DNS server).
For example, I have a QNAP NAS box.
On the 7800N under DHCP server I created a fixed host entry with Host Name qnap, with the MAC address and desired IP address of the qnap box.
Then using the DNS proxy feature of the 7800N I could "ping qnap" or point my browser at http://qnap and it would resolve to the local IP address of the qnap box.
On my new 8800AXL I have added qnap to the Static IP Lease list, with Host Label qnap and the MAC address and desired IP address of the qnap box.
The qnap box receives the same IP address from the DHCP server, but I haven't found a way on the 8800AXL to make "ping qnap" resolve to the qnap box's IP address.
Have I overlooked something, or is this a bug?
I hope it's not a function of the 7800N which was intentionally dropped from the 8800.
