Using blocks of IPs for facing the internet

I have a block of static external IPs with my service provider. I want to make use of them, by assigning some individual IPs to workstations and devices in my home so I can finally track internet usage across my home network. I have the 7800N.

I was told by ISP that I'd need to do some LAN side changes on the router. I'm told I need to separate those devices which will sit behind the NAT and those which would be internet facing and have the NAT disabled.

Is this possible? Further still, is this wise? - since the idea of having my Sonos or Apple TV facing the internet (without firewall protection) is a bit concerning ;-)

Thanks all!

hi mologben99

Yes you can use no nat with a static IP setup, but if you configure the 7800N for this setup (Setup via web gui), you cannot use NAT and NO NAT at the same time, so you will be limited with how many devices can connect to the router (limited to the number of static WAN IP's)

There is a way to use NAT and NO NAT at the same time, but this is NOT covered by Billion support, I have a unoffical guide for that. It is done via telnet but the settings can not be saved.

There are many options you can use,

1. 7800N NO NAT connecting to a broadband router, so other wireless devices can connect behind NAT, devices that you want to have NO NAT, can connect directly to the 7800N
2. You can use one to one NAT mode (easiest setup), but your apple TV will be totally exposed to the internet (all incoming port will be open)
3. 7800N NO NAT, as mentioned above
4. 7800N No NAT with NAT via telnet unsupported

I hope this helps

Thanks

Hi Billion_fan,

Thanks for the detail, this is appreciated. Seems much more of pfaf, that it seems worth.

I decided to eliminate the need to track usage of devices IPs by choosing to change to another ISP which has a more generous allowance in line with needs.

I may come back to you just to understand the unofficial route though - will send PM.

Cheers,
Mo
