7800 modem not 7800n

Hi, this is a long shot but just looking for some advice from the people that know.
I'm looking to replace my router/modem and considering separates this time. This would allow me the flexibility of being able to keep the modem next to the phone socket but move the WiFi router wherever I want.
To be honest, the house isn't huge so a 7800n would cover all the rooms with N wifi but I've done a lot of reading and this seems to fail fairly often on the 7800n. As such I thought if I just get the 7800 (non N) and a separate wifi then I should get less chance of a failure.
I can't find that much info about the 7800 so is anyone using one and are you having any issues with it?
Thanks
