Newbie here- just replaced my Netgear DG834PN with the 7800N at home,as I wanted reliable SNMP support for network monitoring. Using Networx, monitoring is perfect now (only way with DG834 is using DGTeam F/W which overheated the router so after 24 hours or so, the LAN ports would get fuddled, flaky and then break).

So far so good with set up, better speed than the Netgear, better wifi coverage around the house, and stable connection generally. SNR and attenuation as good as or better than the DG834. I have installed latest F/W available.

However, I regularly connect via Cisco ASA 505 VPN at work, to remote onto my PC there. Whilst the 7800N makes the connection to the desktop at work, it is 20x slower than the Netgear.

I have not explored the various firewall, packet filtering and VPN options on the 7800, as the Netgear didn't require any tweaking to achieve almost instant interaction with my network at work - so what am I missing? Do I need to configure something on the 7800 which will get me back up to the same speed as the Netgear when connecting to the VPN at work?

Can you provide a example of the normal speeds and then the slower speeds once using the 7800N.

So I assume you are using a PC to dial out to your VPN server? (PC >>> 7800N >> Internet >> Cisco Kit >> VPN Server)

What kind of VPN are you using PPTP, L2TP?

I can't measure the speed, but can tell you that with the Netgear DG834 the connection into the VPN was almost instant. With the Billion it is at least 10-15 seconds before the handshake is established onto the network, and the same latency applies when connecting to the TS desktop - effectively making it unusable.

I am using L2TP from both an XP and Mac at home (not at the same time).

Any thoughts?
Its clearly a setting somewhere on the Billion, as I know the connection into and through the VPN can work brilliantly using the Netgear. The only difference I can see between them is that the Netgear used PPoa, whereas the Billion won't work on that so I am using PPoe. Every other ADSL setting on the 2 routers is the same.
