TalkTalk profiles

Post by mikenlynns »

I have Billion 7800N and my ISP is TalkTalk. What I would like to know is, does the profile set by TalkTalk limit on the speed one can get, or can one still tinker with it by setting a lower SNR with the hidden setting in the router? If so any hints on how to do this without upsetting the DLM would be appreciated. According to TalkTalk I am at the moment on their one from fastest profile.

Also should the router be set to ADSL2 or ADSL2+?

If you are on the fastest profile I would not change it. I have had issues with talktalk for months and the 7800n didnt fix anything.

However. I dont know what happend recently but I have updated to the latest firmware and things are now very stable in fact I went 20 days without loosing a connection. In fact I only lost connection because I went away and powered down the modem. Now is that just coincidence because bt have upgraded to fibre so they may have changed something. I guess I will never know.

I have phyr enabled both ways. In the past that never worked but like I say with my new stability I am reluctant to change anything. I have adsl2 set and annex L.

A stable connection is a bit of a black art. 7 BT engineers came to our house and thay all said the same thing. I thought it was some kind of standard delivery from the BT manual - "If I went to every callout and got the statistics from your line trace then I would be out of a job because your line is perfect" Obviously not because the 8th engineer found something and fixed a noise problem that caused a disconnection every time the phone went.

Anyway I am still with talktalk and I have just ordered fibre so not too unhappy

Thanks for the replies Dan and Eyerex. I just want to clarify one thing. I have a very stable connection, but I would just like to use the Billion Router to get more speed if I can do it. That is why I asked the questions I did. My current connection speed is 5543 and noise margin 7.4db, according to Router Stats Lite software.

Whilst writing I should say I am one seeming minority who is well satisfied with Talk Talk. I have been a customer almost since they started. I did not have any of the initial problems, that many experienced. And when I have had occasion to call support I have always been given the help I needed. My connection lost sync recently through my own tinkering and the support staff sorted out my problem speedily.

From you I gather that even if Talk Talk set a profile, one can use the Billion to tweak the snr and find the happy medium between maximum speed and satisfactory stability.

I am on a 9db profile and i get 6607 but I think that in general my 7800n was getting slightly slower speeds than the talktalk router. If you change the snr value you probably will get a slightly quicker speed but I would imagine an increase of no more than 1Mb and probably less. I hate to say this but fibre is 10 a month extra, £180 extra over the length of the contract and the 7800n costs £120 or something like that, maybe I would leave the modem and upgrade to fibre and see if they will waive the cost of installation? I think the fibre modem is free? You should check prices but it is something to consider unless obviously you cannot yet receive fibre.

Mike

What are your current stats, ie attenuation , SNRM & D/L speed?

My current stats are:
Connection Speed 5543kbps
Up Rate 955 kbps
Attn (Up/down) 26.3/46.5
Noise Margin 7.6.

I would really like advice as to how to tweak without upsetting TalkTalk's DLM. I don't want it to put me back on a slow profile, rather than forward. For example is it best to only tweak once a day? Also how can one tweak just a little more each time? Or does one need to go back to the default setting first after each tweak?

All advice very gratefully received. -Mike

As long as you don't do the resets in quick succession in an attempt to get the best speeds, then you should be okay.

It's an unusual SNRM you have as TalkTalk do 6, 9, 12 and 15db profiles, as mine normally sits at around 4.5dB on a 6insr8 Profile - (Attenuation about 50dB so there wasn't much point on being on the insr24 when I can't attain over 8meg) and perhaps a factory reset or reboot about half an hour or so before you try the tweak would give your true SNRM.

When things are running right, I usually get a sync of about 6.5 meg so you should be able to get better than what you are on your 46.5, but it can depend on the quality of the cabling as much as the length.

With that SNRM I think you could try dropping it down to about 4.5 by entering the value of 50 and see how you go, but stability should always come before max speed and you may have to settle for just a drop of 1.5dB.

My TalkTalk HG532 and DLink 2680 both sync at higher speeds than the 7800N, but can't sustain them on an evening when the SNRM drops.

I find mid-morning the best time to reset, although this can vary area by area.

Any tweaking is always based on the original Target SNRM and is not accumulative, so any value you enter will always reduce by that amount on the ISP Profile and you can put in whatever consecutive values you choose without defaulting it first.

Thanks so much for a really helpful reply. I feel so much better informed as to what I should do now to try and tweak my speed a bit. I will make a start after the weekend, following your advice, and post my results here in due course. Thanks again - Mike
