BiPac 7800N Ethernet Problems

Hi
I've just brought a 7800N and setting it up was a breeze wireless is great and so far its been stable as anything considering I live in middle on no where.
However there's a problem
I plugged in the uplink to my gigabit switch and the router showed a green light indicating a gigabit connection and there was a green light also on my switch indicating the same.
However I'm unable to communicative via the uplink. I cant ping the router either or access the web interface, the only way I can is via a wi-fi connection.
Also tried to connect a laptop via a cable to each of the Ethernet ports, still no joy either, no IP assigned no access even if I set a static IP.
The only way I've got my uplink working is to plug it into the Cable modem socket then it works, this is less then ideal.
Is there an option somewhere I've missed, I've always used net gear routers.
Did I get a duff one from Amazon?
