WiFi disapears when Router is switched off

I have had my BiPAC for nearly a year now. I bought it because I was led to believe that it would be more stable and give me greater wifi range than the NETGEAR router which came with my Virgin package. Unfortunately the 7800N was nothing but trouble so I disconnected it soon after purchase until recently when I tried again to get it working.
The biggest problem is getting the wireless to work. When I first log into the device I cannot see any mention of wireless in the Physical Port Status and no instruction tab until I run the quick set-up. After lots of attempts at this (because the set-up seems to crash and lock me out or having gone through the set-up process I do not get the "proceed to wireless " instruction and have to do a set-up again and again) I eventually get the wireless to appear in the Physical Port Status along with the configuration menu for the wireless.
I have just returned from a week away during which my computer and router were all switched off to find that the wireless has now disappeared again. Am I supposed to go through the basic set-up each time I power it off cos if I am it heading for the bin as the set-up takes ages because as I said it keeps crashing all the time.
I am running software version 1.06g

Any help would be appreciated, in the meantime I am reverting to my NETGEAR which seems to be more stable.
