iPad VPN with 7800N - DNS issue

I've set up a VPN from my iPad 3 to the 7800N (1.06g firmware) and it connects fine.
The iPad has a toggle to force all traffic via the VPN, or not. When the toggle is set to force all traffic via the VPN it would appear that DNS is not working - there is access from the iPad to the Internet but only by specifying an IP address, rather than a host name, in the browser for example. I tested this by connecting to the 7800N VPN via my Three SIM card and 'What's my IP address' reported the correct (7800N) IP address.
If I change the setting on the iPad to not force all traffic via the VPN, DNS starts working again but 'What's my IP address' reports the address of the Three SIM gateway and not that of the 7800N, so obviously the Internet traffic has not been routed via the VPN.
It seems annoyingly close to working, but doesn't quite - I've tried from a Windows machine which allows DNS to be set for the PPTP tunnel and this does (mostly) work.
The 7800N is obviously dishing out an IP address for VPN access but not setting up DNS correctly and the iPad does not allow DNS to be overridden. Is there any way the 7800N can set this? Maybe via DHCP?
Or does anyone have a different solution to the problem - I think setting up a proxy server on one of my other PCs would probably work as the iPad does have a setting for this within the VPN configuration, but it seems a bit of overkill given all that appears to be missing is DNS. Any help much appreciated.
