Connect at a specific speed?

Is it possible to force a 7800n to connect at a specific speed?
I am having enormous problems with my 7800n. When rebooted, or restarted it always tries to connect at 3.5-4mb. This is too fast for my line so although the line itself connects the internet connection doesn't. ( SNR varies is is typically around 1db at this speed ). Unfortunately the 7800n does not seem to do a very good job of reconnecting. It seems to need the whole line to drop before it will reconnect. Sometimes it will then reconnect at a slower more reliable speed but not often.
So I'd like to be able to force it to connect at around 2mb, which I know is normally stable for my line. Can this be done?
BTW I brought the Billion to replace an ageing Netgear DG584G v4 .... but I have had to return to using that router as although it does often try and connect at the 3-4MB speeds it does reconnect by itself and fall back to a more relaible speed.

If your ADSL Mode is already set to just G.Dmt because of your ISP, then you can increase your Target SNRM by logging into the hidden tweaking page
http://192.168.1.254/snr.cgi
Wire up first before logging in and try setting the value to 150 to start with and if you still have problems, increment by 10 up to 200 which should be sufficient > Apply
After the router has rebooted, you will then need to access the router with
http://192.168.1.254 to Save Config and to view the new Downstream SNRM and sync speed.
As your connection will become more stable - if you are with BT then the DLM may kick in to lower it back to increase your speed as that is its job - to give you the best speed possible for your line, but you may get away with it.
I haven't had any problems doing this myself with TalkTalk when the SNRM was dropping through the floor for a while late at night.

Use the following page
http://192.168.1.254/snr.html (don't use the
http://192.168.1.254/snr.cgi) and change the SNR to 150, and then check your SNR values, if the SNR is not high enough keep increasing the SNR value on the
http://192.168.1.254/snr.html page by 5 or 10 until you reach the SNR value you want.

So what is wrong with snr.cgi when both snr.cgi and snr.html will give you the same page ?

We have had two customers report issues when they use the CGI extension that the SNR will not hold and will revert back to -1. (after a restart or power cycle, the solution was to use the
http://192.168.1.254/snr.html)
You can continue to use the CGI page, if it is not causing you any issues, but I would recommend using the html page, as we have never had any reported issue using this page.

Thanks for the explanation.

Thanks, I'll have another go at setting the SNR later. I did try it before, but it always shows as 0 and refused to take any settings I tried. This was after upgrading to 1.06g and a factory reset. It refused to go to the default -1 value.
Can't remember if I used the html or cgi page.
Yes I have all the poor line quality settings. gdmt only. Anex l and M unticked. phyr ticked up and down.
At the moment I have found RouterStats so am recoding the current state of my line with the Netgear. Doesn't look good with SNR varying between 17.5db and 6db but with occassional lows of 2db. I will stick with this for a day then repeat with the 7800N.
Is there any reason the 7800N won't reconnect by itself once the line has failed? Not being able to recover from errors seems to be its biggest failing, and the reason I'm back with the Netgear for now.
Cheers
Alan

I've never had any problems with my 7800N recovering, but when your SNRM is bouncing all over the place like that, then it's a fair bet that you have a line fault - especially if the loss of connection still occurs when wired.
If you are with BT then you can use these two links for some self diagnosis prior to reporting a fault.
http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/deta ... and-faults
http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/deta ... s-dropping
And read through my post in this forum thread
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=602 to see/resolve any possible channel conflicts that could be interfering with your broadband connection.
After a factory reset I think any tweak does revert to 0, but as it's been a while since I've used anything other than default or a factory reset - can't remember for definite.
Once you have the router set up, then you can backup the config should you need to factory reset (other than for a firmware upgrade) then you can restore with that to save you having to input the other settings you would normally do, plus any static IPs for any external devices.
