8800AXL Wifi Range Issues

Hi,
Have my 8800AXL connected to Virgin Media(VM) via the VM router in modem mode.
It seems to work fine, but the wifi signals for 2.4G & 5G are not great. Only when I stand directly next to the router do I get full signal. If I stand 10 meters away in the same room It goes down to half the signal.
Are there some settings I should be changing or updating? I have upgraded to the latest firmware.
Thanks
J

The only option is to try and change the channel on both bands

I will try that this evening and see if it makes a difference. But I think I already changed to a channel none of my neighbours were using.
Is that really the only option?

The wifi range on the 8800AXL isn't great due to it having internal antennas. Nearly every review of the product that I have read has identified that. The rest of the hardware is very good though and I can go well over 100 days of line connection and system uptime and it is usually only power cuts that cause it to reset

The wireless range is poorer than the Sky router it replaced unfortunately.

also very disappointed by this. The 8800AXL is considerably worse than the 7800DXL it replaced. Areas of my house that used to have really good wifi are now blackspots.
It's sad that such an amazing router from a reliability point of view is ruined by aesthetics. The primary purpose of upgrading for me is the speed that wireless AC gives, but I have had to settle for reduced range too. Not particularly happy with my 8800AXL purchase so far
