Problems with the DHCP control I believe on 8800NL

I have had two recent problems with this
One with a Samknows box where the box itself couldn't connect to its server
A power off / power on of the router connected to the fibre connection but didn't validate to the ISP (just sat trying to connect)
A full restart of the router from the web interface fixed the connection to the ISP (it was almost instantaneous) and after doing that the Samknows box connected immediately
To hopefully stop it happening again I gave it a fixed IP address (the one it already had 192.168.1.102)
My Windows 7 PC and my XP PC already had fixed IP addresses of 192.168.1.101 and 192.168.1.103 respectively to get round the problem of the XP PC getting a different IP address on reboot which mucked up the Win 7 PC when it woke from sleep
However - and this is where I hit a problem - this morning the XP PC could see the network and the devices on it but couldn't access the internet
I tried all the usual things including rebooting the router and the computer to no avail
It was only when I removed the fixed IP address from the router and rebooted the PC was it fixed
Router firmware is 2.32d.dm12
Suggestions please as to what could have gone wrong and how to stop it happening again
