questions about "modem mode" on 8800nl

Hi,
I hope someone can help please as I have a question about the 8800nl in "modem only mode".
I am currently a sky fibre user but I use a 3rd party router (asus rt-ac87u) that supports sky's dynamic IP along with the option 60/61 requirement for the wan port. It works just fine connected to a bt open reach eci modem but the sync rate has been always lower on the eci modem when compared to the sky sr102.
I would like to try the 8800nl but using it in the modem only mode and allow my asus router to continue doing all my lan & wifi services via the wan port.
Just wondered if the 8800nl supports a true modem mode so I can connect my asus router via its wan port and get it to login - has anyone been able to do this without any problems.
Somewhat unsure what the modem mode actually gives you modem wise - if its the same as a bt open reach modem then I hope it would work just fine.
many thanks in advance -
