I see the explicit guidance is that when you upgrade and flash new firmware you mustn't restore previous settings you need to do a full factory reset. I've never done this and things were fine (am running latest h firmware on my 7800).
However recently I've started to get a few network problems and some odd behaviour. Maybe I should reflash, restore factory and enter all the configuration again manually - good idea?
Not sure why you shouldn't upgrade and retain settings, it's just a bit of a faff to re-enter *all* the router settings (not too bad though I guess).

Yes you will need to reset back to factory default once the firmware has been upgraded.

but you miss my point - if i restore factory - will that likely sort out network problems?

Hi
I think you are safer putting all the settings in again, it is a pain but the Billion 7800 seems very fussy when re-using settings.
For example I had a strange issue (on 1.06h) where I needed to re-enabled DCHP on the Billion and change the internal addresses it was handing out. Once the change was made the ADSL modem side of the Billion dropped out, i.e. no flashing modem light and no ADSL sync. I didn't think at first it was related to what I was doing and thought the modem had gone again at the exchange (this had happened before needing the ISP to issue a reset to the line card, but this wasn't without a lot of effort proving the issue wasn't my end first as you can imagine, it took 7 days!)
So I tried a second ADSL router just to check and that worked. So I factory reset the Billion and the modem was back up. I loaded back the saved config file, all okay, then proceeded to add back the DHCP changes, and bang, the modem dropped out again.
The only way I could make the changes I needed and still have a functioning ADSL router was to factory reset and enter everything in again, this time it was okay.
So not sure what was going wrong. Of course a change to DHCP settings on the LAN should never crash the modem, but that saved configuration file and different firmware versions certainly can have unexplained consequences.
Regards
Phil
