Hi,
I purchased a 7800N about 6 weeks ago, and it all appears to be good, though one thing I have noticed with it is that it never seems to be able to reconnect automatically to the ISP when the connection drops for whatever reason. It doesn't lose Sync but when the connection drops out (usually between 6-8 days uptime) it then fails to reconnect. Checking the logs it fills up with the following.
Apr 01 10:39:39 daemon pppd[6327]: PPP: Start to connect ...
Apr 01 10:39:39 daemon pppd[6327]: Using interface ppp0_0_38_1
Apr 01 10:39:39 daemon pppd[6327]: Connect: ppp_0_0_38_1 <-->
Apr 01 10:39:39 daemon pppd[6327]: Couldn't increase MTU to 1500.
Apr 01 10:39:48 daemon pppd[6327]: LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
Apr 01 10:39:48 daemon pppd[6327]: Connection terminated.
Apr 01 10:39:51 daemon pppd[6327]: PPP: Start to connect ...
Apr 01 10:39:51 daemon pppd[6327]: Using interface ppp0_0_38_1
Apr 01 10:39:51 daemon pppd[6327]: Connect: ppp_0_0_38_1 <-->
Apr 01 10:39:51 daemon pppd[6327]: Couldn't increase MTU to 1500.
Apr 01 10:40:00 daemon pppd[6327]: LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
Apr 01 10:40:00 daemon pppd[6327]: Connection terminated.
Repeating it over and over. The quickest way I have found to get it to reconnect is to unplug the RJ11 from the phone socket for a few seconds so the Sync drops, and then plug it back in. It then resyncs to the same speed and logs on without an issue. The router is running 1.06h, and did factory reset the router once did the upgrade and configured it manually again. My ISP is TalkTalk in case that has any bearing on the issue. I have also tweaked the SNR, though when I also tried it with the SNR set back to -1 the issue still occurred. The current ADSL Stats are the following.
ADSL Status
Parameters
DSP Firmware Version A2pB025f.d22k
DMT Status No Defect
Operational Mode ADSL2+
Upstream 1020
Downstream 17472
SNR Margin(Upstream) 12.8
SNR Margin(Downstream) 3.4
Line Attenuation(Upstream) 15.3
Line Attenuation(Downstream) 29.0
It has an SNR tweak currently of 50, though as the Sync doesn't drop out when it disconnects I am not sure that it is the cause of the issue.
I also have SRA Enable ticket and PhyR tickets for upstream and downstream, could either of these also cause the issue?

Have you tried to use the protocol PPPOE on the WAN page?

Didn't realise that PPPoE would work with TalkTalk. I am testing it now and it has connect, though will probably be a week or so until I know if it has solved it.billion_fan wrote:Have you tried to use the protocol PPPOE on the WAN page?

Re: 7800N never manages to auto-reconnect
I have exactly the same problem (with the same log data) on Zen internet with my 7800N (tried 1.06e and 1.06g) but it happens every day or two. PPPoE doesn't fix it unfortunately. The only fix is a reboot or pulling out the phone line until sync drops.
I should note that this is with a factory reset, no SNR tweaks, PhyR or SRA Enable.

Have you checked with Zen to see if your line is suffering from a stale session?

Re: 7800N never manages to auto-reconnect
They came back to me yesterday and said they think it is noise related saying that my SNR when testing was 7.8dB. Personally I would have thought a noise problem would exhibit different symptoms. I haven't asked about a stale session but I can do.billion_fan wrote:LinuxJedi wrote:I have exactly the same problem (with the same log data) on Zen internet with my 7800N (tried 1.06e and 1.06g) but it happens every day or two. Re: 7800N never manages to auto-reconnect
I would suggest letting them finish testing your line, and try the suggested fixes first, if that fails you can raise the stale session topic with them, and see if it is related.LinuxJedi wrote:They came back to me yesterday and said they think it is noise related saying that my SNR when testing was 7.8dB. Re: 7800N never manages to auto-reconnect
Since making the change to PPPoE for the connection type my connection hasn't dropped. So has made my connection rock solid, but means I don't know if its resolved the auto-reconnect issue, but if reconnects are going to be so rare it won't really be an issue
