How do Homeplugs work?
Homeplug powerline adaptors are designed to enable home and small office users to take advantage of their existing power circuits to network data and internet traffic from one side of the house or office to the other.

Billion Homeplugs come with their own embedded Ethernet port and you will need 2 Homeplugs to set up your network. Simply plug one Homeplug into a power socket next to your broadband router, and attach the plug to the router via one of the supplied Ethernet cables.

Then plug the second Homeplug unit anywhere else on the circuit, for instance in a bedroom or garage, and you can access the data stream via the Ethernet port of the second Homeplug unit.

This is great for premises that are too large, or have walls that are too thick for wireless to penetrate, or where there is simply too much interference to guarantee decent wireless coverage.

Note that plugs can be added anywhere on the electrical circuit to create your network (a general rule of thumb is any mains socket that runs off a single dedicated electricity meter).

You can also attach a games console such as XBox or Playstation to your Homeplugs to have your online gaming wired in, no longer needing to worry about slow speeds or drop-outs that you often get with wireless due to interference.

In fact you can network any device with an Ethernet port. As well as games consoles, you can add a NAS box, a printer, a webcam, in fact any device with a network (Ethernet) port.

You can have as many as 8 plugs on a circuit.

Powerline has been used for quite a few years now in the UK so it is tried and tested technology.

What is driving the adoption of powerline devices in the home now is the fact that wireless networks are getting more and more congested, causing annoying drop outs and disconnects. In many cases there is a practical limit as to how far wireless will actually go.

In these instances the latest Homeplug devices will deliver the speeds that customers need for their home networking requirements.

Which Homeplug is best?
The standard you need to look for in the UK is Homeplug AV. This is an industry standard and all AV 200 products should be interoperable. But be aware that AV 200+ or AVplus or Smart+ are generally proprietary and may not work with other AV 200 products.

There are 85 Mbps Homeplug products on the market, but while these will give acceptable performance over short distances, speed does degrade over longer distances, and they are not compatible with AV 200 devices.

Depending on your mains wiring the 85 Mbps can deliver real-world speeds of up to 25 Mbps, but this can slow dramatically if there is interference on the line and some users struggle to even achieve more than a couple of Mbps, especially when used on longer circuits.

The AV 200 devices theoretically support up to 200 Mbps, but in a real-world environment can be expected to achieve up to 70-80 Mbps in good conditions over short distances - and should be able to sustain over 30 Mbps on longer lines. Performance on longer lines is a particular strength of the Billion Homeplugs.

Performance is almost as quick at distance as it is close up. Consistently high speeds and an intelligent design puts the Billion ahead in our HomePlug AV 200 Group Test

There are also new AV 500 products that have recently been launched. These are designed to work at a theoretical 500 Mbps throughput, with a real world speed in excess of 200 Mbps very achievable. For this reason the interface is a gigabit port to prevent a throughput bottleneck at point of contact.

The Billion AV 500s are compatible with the Billion AV 200s, so for instance you could run a 2073N on a P108 network.

The Billion Homeplugs also have reversible clips so you can turn the Homeplug upside down for use in areas where the power sockets are too close to the floor.

Wired
There are five basic products in the Billion range – the BiPAC P106 starter pack is the main product that you need to start off your Homeplug AV 200 network at home.
Other models are the BiPAC 2074 R2, BiPAC P108, BiPAC 2073N and BiPAC P106N.

The BiPAC P106 is the new “mini” sized version of the award-winning BiPAC P104. The P106 twin pack consists of 2 wired Ethernet HomePlug adaptors. These are the same as the P104 (2 x 2071 adaptors) but with a smaller footprint, ideal for use around congested power sockets and in extension strips. Each adaptor is called a 2073, so the P106 pack consists of 2 x 2073 adaptors. Simply attach one adaptor to your router via the supplied Ethernet cable and the other can be placed anywhere else in the home on the same electrical circuit for sharing your Internet connection or even files over the network.

Set up is easy – just plug and play – no networking experience is necessary.

The BiPAC 2074 R2 has a built-in electrical power outlet with noise filter – called AC Pass Through. This feature frees up space by offering users an additional power socket for another electrical device – ideal for those with limited wall outlets nearby. Simply plug your electrical device into the body of the 2074R2 to save yourself a power socket space, With noise filtering, the BiPAC 2074 R2 enhances powerline communications coverage and prevents electrical appliances interfering with the data transmission quality.

The BiPAC P108 is the new AV 500 Mbps starter pack – consisting of 2 x 2075 AV 500 wired HomePlug adaptors with gigabit interface. These are also available as single units, the BiPAC 2075, to allow single units to be added to the network.

Wireless
The BiPAC 2073N uniquely combines a high-speed wireless 'N' access point with a HomePlug AV 200 adapter, giving the best of both worlds in one easy-to-use device - super fast HomePlug networking that allows speeds of up to 200Mbps through your existing mains power supply network, and up to 300 Mbps high-speed wireless connectivity.

Simply add a 2073N plug to your existing AV 200 powerline network and create a mini wireless 'N' hotspot anywhere in the home.

Great for use in larger homes, garages, outbuildings, or where the thickness of the walls prevents good wireless coverage. The 2073N will carry your internet connection through your existing powerline network to inaccessible parts of the premises, and then relay it wirelessly to your laptop, desktop, games console, printer, camera or any wireless device in client mode. WEP, WPA, WPA2 wireless encryption can be set up via a simple web interface to maximise your wireless security.
If you prefer to start with the wireless solution then the BiPAC P106N Wireless Homeplug bundle is your best bet. Combining 1 x 2073 wired AV 200 adapter and 1 x 2073N wireless ‘N’ AV 200 adapter, the P106N is the most cost effective way to set up your AV 200 network at home with the combination of superfast wired networking through your domestic mains circuit, and superfast wireless ‘N’ networking via the 2073N.

Unique interchangeable sockets are included with P106, P108, 2075, 2073N and P106N to enable the HomePlugs to be placed away from obstructions, such as skirting boards or shelving, by rotating the unit around 180°. In addition the HomePlug adaptors will go into "sleep" mode when not being used, offering a saving of 60% over other adaptors.

Billion’s HomePlug AV 200 and AV 500 devices, 2071, 2072, 2073, 2073N, 2074 R2, 2075, P104, P106, P108 and P106N are all compatible with each other.
All Billion Homeplugs and routers have a 2 year warranty.
Additional Euro clips are also available from selected suppliers for using the Homeplugs abroad.
