I think I may have solved it.

I have a Pi running on my network which pings the router to ensure it has connectivity and, if it fails, it reboots after a couple of minutes. However I think it was pinging too often.

I monitored the nf_conntrack_count and when I rebooted the Pi, the count dropped from about 5,500 to about 300. I've modified the script on the Pi to ensure it pings less frequently.

Is about 300 a more normal figure?
