Port redirection

Post by pungbricks »

I am thinking of purchasing a BiPAC 7800 ADSL2 router but need to know if the following scenario is possible before I commit: I have a number of web servers in my home network. Typically these web servers are intelligent printers, range extenders and hubs, and they can only listen on port 80. The servers can be administered locally (i.e. from within the LAN environment) via an HTTP / port 80 web browser. I need to administer these devices from the internet side of the router. I am hoping that I can set up individual translation rules for each server in the router config menus. For example, from the internet I could target port 8000 which might then be converted to a local address on port 80:- http://mydydnsname.com:8000 would be translated at the router to 192.168.1.5:80. Further to this I could also target http://mydydnsname.com:8001 - this would be translated at the router to 192.168.1.6:80.
My present router only allows port forwarding to a single / unique internal address on port 80, so I am only able to set up a rule for access to one web server, hence my question above.

If what I am proposing is not possible please could anyone suggest an alternative method for achieving my requirement?

I think the answer is yes.

The configuration page for virtual server/port mapping takes an external port & redirects that to an internal IP address & associated port. This can be set by TCP , UDP or TCP/UDP.

Thanks very much, I guess nobody has actually tried it but it certainly seems like it should work. I'll give it a try as soon as I have the router.

I have actually done it when I let a support person from Synology into my NAS. They used SSH on port 22 which I directed straight to the NAS. They accessed it by 194.xx.xx.xx:22 and that worked just fine, so I'd be pretty confident that what you want to do will work.

Just to confirm: I now have the 7800N, it works exactly as I had hoped. I now have a number of incoming ports, all translated to different local IP addresses but all of them targeting port 80. :D
