Re: set up problem
I have put a wall socket in the understairs area where my router is and upstairs where I use my pc.
I am using cat5e cables from the router to the wall socket and from the socket to my switch and have swapped them with others.
When I connect my old switch to my devices upstairs everything works fine with the led illuminated for whatever port I connect the cat5e cable to.
When I use my net gigabit switch the led on the router does not light anymore.
Do yo think I have been unlucky and got 2 defective switches?

Re: set up problem
It's weird. Im assuming you've tried all 4 of the gigabit ports on the billion?
I am using this one I bought from Amazon and it works fine: TP-Link TL-SG1008D 8-Port Unmanaged Gigabit Desktop Switch.
It may be a faulty switch again. But it could be that the plugs you use are not gigabit compatible and you may need to purchase new ones. I'm not that technically minded. Maybe do a Google search for your current plugs to see if they are compatible.
The other thing you could do is connect the switch via an Ethernet cable direct to the billion and then connect a laptop via Ethernet to the switch. That way if you are getting gigabit speeds then you know it's the plugs.

Thinking about it, it's most likely the plugs. But weird that the Ethernet lights do not light up when you plug the cable in them. Hmmmm.Flimbyite wrote:Thanks ricke17 that's a good idea.

Lemme know.

Re: set up problem
Sorted!
The switch works fine when connected straight into the router and at gigabit speeds too.
It's the wall sockets or cable between them that must be causing the problem - they have been in use for a while now.
At least I know what's causing the problem.
Thanks for the help
