8800 AXL previous firmware?

Post by michaelm »

Hi

Just before i went away for three weeks i upgraded my firmware to the latest 2.32e

Just back this week and suffering some severe disconnections. Could be an ISP problem but in the interest of troubleshooting. How can i get the older firmware?

Are there any logs i can supply to help?

I have attached todays log for info.

Thanks

Attached is a older firmware

From looking at the logs, it seems your line is dropping out, the router cannot provide you with a answer to why this is happening.

Thanks

I had another disconnection yesterday and here is the relevant part of the log:

Jul 27 00:14:26 daemon notice syslog: pppd:No response to 2 echo-requests
Jul 27 00:14:26 daemon notice syslog: pppd:Serial link appears to be disconnected.
Jul 27 00:14:26 daemon crit syslog: Clear IP addresses. PPP connection DOWN.
Jul 27 00:14:26 daemon crit syslog: Clear IP addresses. Connection DOWN.
Jul 27 00:14:26 daemon notice syslog: pppd:Couldn't increase MTU to 1500.
Jul 27 00:14:26 daemon err syslog: pppd:Couldn't increase MRU to 1500
Jul 27 00:14:32 daemon notice syslog: pppd:Connection terminated.
Jul 27 00:14:32 daemon notice syslog: pppd:Connect time 389.1 minutes.
Jul 27 00:14:32 daemon notice syslog: pppd:Sent 4062728684 bytes, received 2516844398 bytes.
Jul 27 00:14:32 daemon notice syslog: pppd:Doing disconnect
Jul 27 00:14:35 daemon notice syslog: PPP: Start to connect ...
Jul 27 00:14:39 daemon crit syslog: PPP server detected.
Jul 27 00:14:39 daemon crit syslog: PPP session established.

I have already logged a case with PluSNet who typically advised me to sue their own router which is rather annoying as i don't think is the router. I explained the situation and the technical guy on the phone seemed to agree with me that it is not the router. I had a similar set of disconnections back in May when i had an Apple Airport Extreme router so i really don't think it was the router. Back then their system showed a copper lien fault but the Openreach engineer could not find anything and miraculously the line returned to normal after his visit.

My thoughts are that whatever the fault on the line is intermittent and back in May after a good two weeks of random disconnections the line was capped by PlusNet, the day the engineer was here he asked for the cap to be lifted and then it was steady for more than 40 days. And now it is back again!

Hmmm, perhaps time to move to Virgin? Will the 8800AXL work with Virgin as it is brand new!

Yes it looks like a DSLAM or line issue (pppd:No response to 2 echo-requests) meaning the ISP is not responding to the routers echo requests.

Yes you can use the 8800AXL with a virgin super hub in modem only mode (connect the super hub to the EWAN port on the router, I use a similar setup at home with a 7800DXL, 150mbps Virgin service)

Also i read somewhere that PlusNet does not support PhyR. Do i need to disable that? Will it help in any way? Are there any other PlusNet settings i need to know off? I also use PlusNet TV and that works flawlessly, thought in the last firmware update i had to enable Wireless Multicast forwarding as it was messing up the wifi everytime i recorded or tuned into IPTV. This was not the case with older firmware.

I am connecting directly to the Master socket and i have an FTTC connection which i know it can support up to 56-57 down and 17 up. Currently i am syncing at exactly half that.

Before i joined PlusNet in October last year i was with BT and all was well for 2 years. The same was with PlusNet till this May when i got the first fault. I think this would have happened anyway and it is not PlusNet's or routers fault.

There's nothing else on the router side that needs to be configured

I am guessing DLM is kicking in and lowering your sync rate, most likely because of a line fault, which will need to be investigated.

You also have the older firmware, but I don't think that will make a major difference

Thanks for the prompt reply

I will pass that back to PlusNEt. Would rather troubleshoot it further with them and sort the line out as Virgin will be a bit more expensive for me and i don't quite trust their service and reliability. The Upload speed is a bit pathetic personally and the limits they impose are also a bit pathetic. I travel a lot and i often stream my home movies over Plex Media Server and so does my family abroad and the upload speed limits/restrictions will be easily breached a few times a week!

In reply to your latest post - i am still running the latest firmware as i agree with you i do not think it is the firmware on the router and i would rather NOT downgrade.

Thanks

Apologies for re-kindling an old thread but it turns out that PlusNet are unable to fix the line fault and i am tired of having engineers over - 3 so far!!

I have given up and just ordered Virgin. I intend to continue using my 8800AXL as a the router +wifi.

Are there any handy guides of how to configure it for Virgin? The SuperHub will be in Modem mode with wifi off obviously. I was mostly interested on the Billion side.

Further i have made (with your help) some extensive port forwarding and allocated static IPs to my internal network to my synology server. I am assuming that all that will stay the same as the router is doing the DCHP?

Thanks

See the attached guide for your setup with a Virgin Super Hub, or just run through the Quick start option (Ethernet >> IP over Ethernet connection, once your Super Hub is set to modem only mode and connected to the EWAN port on the 8800)

You will have to setup your port forwarding rules again, as you can't edit the 'Interface', so take a screen shot of the rules, and once up and running add them again selecting the correct interface (ETH/IPOE) (your old rules are setup for a PPPOE interface, so hence they won't work)
