Router won't boot after connecting Sky

Post by jensgang »

I have a Bipac 7800n which has been working perfectly for around1 year. Earlier this week I got a flyer from Sky telling me that I could connect my Sky+ box to my router and get Anytime+.

I did this (via an Ethernet cable), Sky recognised that it was connected to a network and I pressed Select on the Sky remote as instructed but then I lost Internet connectivity. Checking the router it constantly restarts the following pattern:

Power light comes on (green)
Internet light flashes green briefly
Power light goes out
All four Ethernet lights flash amber
Pattern repeats

I've tried switching it off, putting a paper clip into the reset button, turning it on and holding reset until the power light goes amber. At that point I tried to connect with an ethernet cable with my pc IP address set to 192.168.1.100 as described in the manual, but got a 404 error.

Do you have any ideas on how to rectify this. I really don't want to lose the router - it is good, cost a lot of money and it seems very strange that connecting it to Sky could have destroyed it completely.

Many thanks

More than likely won't help, but just a couple of things to try if you have not already done so.
Try another network cable.
& i'm sure your not, but you are not plugging into the EWAN port by mistake are you.

Scrap the 2nd idea, just read the manual, the EWAN port can be used anyway.

Have you tried using 192.168.1.254 as the gateway for the router which is outside of the DHCP Pool of 192.168.1.100 -199

The ipv4 addresses will auto use firstly .100 up over depending on how you are connecting (wired or wireless) and how many other devices you have connected so the .100 for SKY could be a conflict.

If you wire up and from the cmd prompt enter ipconfig /all it will show you the Default Gateway as well as the Wireless LAN and Ethernet ipv4 addresses. You may have to disconnect Sky for this.

Log into the router and via Advanced/Status/DHCP Table see what the leases are showing, with it resetting when you connect Sky it may not show anything for that, but it's worth a look.

Right click on the signal strength bars in the Taskbar and select Open Network and Sharing Center/click on Wireless Network Connection (SSID) then first on Wireless Properties and ensure the box for Connect automatically when this network is in range is ticked - OK

In the next window that comes up click on Properties/Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4) and ensure the radio buttons for Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain a DNS server address automatically are ticked (unless you have specified alternative DNS Servers).

Tick the box for Validate settings upon exit - OK - Close where the Network Diagnostics will kick in, which may give the message that it can't ID any problem or it will find something.

The sequence of events on the router would suggest it's doing its own reset when you connect Sky, so there would appear to be a conflict somewhere.

Thank you both for your responses. The problem is that the router won't start sufficiently to log in. I am using the ip address of 192.168.1.254 via a browser with an Ethernet cable connected to the pc to try to log onto the router. Although the router recognises the wired connection (green flashing light on the port it is connected to) I can't login, just get a page not available. As mentioned in my first post the router just repeats a sequence and never completes start up.

Are you trying to connect the LAN with Sky still connected or is this an out of the box sort of thing following a factory reset and have have you tried different Ethernet ports.

In your first post you say that the Ethernet ports are flashing amber. Is this without it wired up as in your last post, you say the port is flashing green which means it's trying to connect to a desktop Gigabit card. With a mini N card as you would have in a laptop, the Ethernet port light would remain amber.

What does the router do following a factory reset without it connected to the pc ?

HI jensgang

Please try the following recovery procedure. Before you try this, you will a firmware version, please download the newest firmware from here viewtopic.php?f=16&t=356

1. Turn off the unit
2. Use a pin or paperclip and press and hold the reset button
3. Turn on the unit
4. The power light should stay on 'Amber' once done you can let go of the reset button
5. Plug a PC upto the 'EWAN' port on the router
6. Set a static IP to you LAN card in the range of 192.168.1.100, subnet 255.255.255.0 (no need for a gateway etc)
7. Open IE and browse to http://192.168.1.254
8. Select the new firmware file and click on 'Upgrade'

Once done the unit should start up correctly, you will need to change your LAN connection back to 'Obtain a IP address automatically, and Obtain a DNS server automatically'

I hope this helps :D

Hi Billion_fan

Many thanks for your post. Following your instructions I did upgrade the firmware, however having restarted the router it is back to the sequence of:

With no ethernet cables connected, just the phone and power:

Green power light
4 Ethernet lights flash amber (approx .5 sec)
Internet light flashes green quickly once
Green power light comes on .... pattern repeats.

With 1 ethernet cable (connected to pc), phone and power:

Green power light
Connected ethernet light flashes green approx 12 times
4 Ethernet lights flash amber (approx .5 sec)
Internet light flashes green quickly once
Green power light comes on .... pattern repeats

I think I've come to the end of the line and need a new router but would appreciate anyone's thoughts.

Thanks

Have you tried factory resetting the router with the pc switched off to see if it boots up then ?

Yes, I have done a factory reset with nothing ( including phone) connected, plus with phone and ethernet cable connected. I've used various Ethernet ports.

The only time I managed to connect was after following the instructions to upgrade the firmware, however after resetting the router went back into it's cycle of rebooting. It never loads up, just continually reboots.

I've had to buy another router because I work at home a lot, however if anyone has any idea on any other steps I can try please post them as it is always handy to have a backup and this was a very reliable router
