Firmware Updating and re instating the custom settings

Post by cwog001 »

From what I have read on the forum, a firmware update must be applied to a Billion modem/router when it has been been set back to the factory settings.
I have also read that one cannot use a backup of the settings created with a different level of firmware to reset the device after a different level of firmware has been applied.

The question is - is there away of storing the settings in a human readable form so that the settings can be reapplied when the newer firmware has been applied.
My thoughts are to do screen grabs of each screen of the router settings so that I can manually re insert the settings. Is there a better way?

Reading the back up file does not to be a very easy way of determining the settings that have to be re applied..

Yes, I did it the other day.

Just go to each page and do a screen shot. You won't need to do every page only those that have settings made by you.

EDIT:

You got me thinking, if you save the config file and open it with Notepad you can view the settings, it is not very readable but it is there to see.

Notepad++ gives a more readable output - it's free just google it.

Thanks for your replies - my next plan is to compare the backup file from a fully setup machine with the back up file from a machine reset to factory conditions this might give me a list of changes to update once the firmware has been updated.

I am currently downloading the compare program at the moment - it is part of a developer package so a big download for one small program.

I did do the the screen dump of all the pages as well, so I have a backup plan as well.
