Well Pleased with BiPAC 8800NL

Post by pintosal »

I bought a BiPAC 8800NL about 6 months ago, and replaced my HG612 on BT Infinity.

The WiFi side has been a bit of a disappointment, and I now use my old Netgear router for the wireless.

But the VDSL, on my version 2.32d.dh61, has been outstanding.

Over time, the download speed shown by DSLStats has crept up from 60Mb/s to 64, then to 70, and finally, this morning it had resynched to 78Mb/s. Tests with Speedtest.net now give me 75Mb/s.

Upload speed is 19999 Mb/s

Even though I am an inveterate tweaker, I never switch it off. To say that I am well pleased, is an understatement.

I am very pleased with my 8800NL as well. I'm not sure how high your SNR margin was when you first plugged it in. For instance if it was 9.0db or so then that's why you got such a high improvement.
But considering I was running the max sync rate with the HG612, 62000kbps,20000kbps @ 6.0 db SNR
after a month of owning the 8800nl the sync rate is now, 68000kbps, 20000kbps @ 6.0 db SNR

So by just changing modem and nothing else I have gained 6mb which is pretty incredible.

I also use two netgear D6300 routers setup as wireless AP's only.
One downstairs and one upstairs
These give out excellent 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz speeds.

There both hooked up to the 8800nl which has wifi disabled, but is my DHCP server, and upnp manager. It works out great

I think SNR Margin started above 6 and gradually dropped.

Now it is running at around 3, so it will be interesting to see if it holds.

I get no CRC errors, with a fairly high number of FEC errors - which I suppose I should expect.

Oh really your SNR dropped to 3db??
On my HG612 it went to 3db once and I got 73mb. The power reset and it went back to 6db unfortunately and lost the speed.
I went on to the BT forums, and they said the SNR value doesn't go to 3db only its target 6db
I thought maybe it was just a glitch then. I guess not if yours has dropped to 3db too.
Out of curiosity how high was your connection time until you got the SNR lowered and was it automatic?
Thanks for the reply

My connection time was about 60 days and, yes, it lowered itself automatically.

Looking at the stats it happened around 4am a couple of days ago. There was no power reset to account for it.

Again, according to the stats, the Billion has been powered up continuously for 63 days

60 days is a long time to wait, I find my self messing around with the set-up quite often. I guess Ill need to give it a shot, and try not to touch it for 2 months. Also, do you use a VDSL faceplate at all or standard filter and is your SNR adjustment on -1 for automatic within the 8800nl settings?

My SNR adjustment is set at -1 and VDSL faceplate.

I had heard that lines 'settle down' and just decided to let it do its own thing. But it was hard leaving it alone without tweaking.
