Advice regarding SNR

Post by craney5 »

Morning all

Just wondered if some could give me some advice regarding the SNR with the 7800n. I have used the SNR tweak and set it to around 75 it was on 0 by default instead of -1 dont know how much of a difference that will make. My speed has increased a little and my SNR is now sitting at around 5.8-6db downstream. These are my line stats 2912 Down 416 Up. I have a long line so my speed is really poor i know. The problem seems to be that whenever i power off my router the SNR tweak that i set does not seem to reset. When the router re-connects the SNR still seems to sit around the 5.8-6db mark. Im with sky so i know there default SNR is 7db just curious to know why the 7800n will not reset the tweak made to the SNR?

Hope someone can help, im running firmware version 1.06d

Many Thanks

This is most likely because your SNR tweak has been saved to the flash memory.

You need to change your SNR back -1 (default) to get the normal SNR 7db set by your ISP.

Hi mate, thanks for the response. I did a factory rest to load the defaults a month or so ago and the SNR to reset to 7db but when i tweaked it via the SNR tweak again it would still stay the same after a reboot of the router kinda strange really. I also remember try to set the default back to -1 and it resulted in me not being able to get an adsl connection again which is strange.

Would there be any benefit to upgrading to the latest firmware? Other than this slight issue im not seeing any more problems so im always wary of upgarding to new firmware. I am also thinking of changing my ADSL mode to just g.dmt as this is what sky have me on not sure if it will make a difference but all the other options seems to be ticked in the menu, would there be any reason to also enable the SRA option?

Thanks again for your kind help

If you reset back to factory default settings the SNR settings should default back to -1.

The SNR will stay the same after the reboot as, a reboot does not reset the SNR value set in the router.

Regarding the firmware upgrade the old saying of "if its not broken don't fix it" comes to mind.

I would suggest changing over to g.dmt and tweaking the SNR, once tweaked and you have found a stable value (SNR setting) I would leave it on this, and forget about it.

Regarding SRA your ISP have to support this function at the exchange otherwise there is no point in enabling this function.
