Billion 8800nl r2 - DNS

Post by Stevie1978 »

Apologies if this has been asked before,
Can anyone help with the above router holding DNS servers.
I have input the DNS info on 3 different places. However, it seems to be resetting back in the log and WAN status page.

Help please.

On the Status >> WAN page this will show your ISP DNS servers that is offered through the WAN. (you don't have to use these though)

To use your own DNS servers, click on 'Advanced Setup >> DNS >> DNS' select 'Use the following Static DNS IP address' and enter the DNS servers you want to use.

Once set click on 'Status' in the middle of the page it should now show the DNS servers you are using.

This is what I do. However, in the WAN status and log page still state the old servers.
New DNS = 1.1.1.1

Old DNS = 212.69.63.36

As long as the DNS severs are shown on the status page, they are the DNS servers used.

On the Status >> WAN page this will show the DNS offered by the ISP, the same will be logged within the system log (you don't have to use these servers)

Attached is a quick ping test with DNS servers set to 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2, once set we can't ping domain addresses. So the function is working as intended.

Not wishing to derail the OPs thread but, I think this could be classed as related.

Configuration >> LAN >> User Router's settings as DNS Server - When this box is checked, will devices on the LAN use the DNS addresses set in the Configuration >> WAN >> WAN Service page?

So if Configuration >> WAN >> WAN Service has 'Obtain DNS' set to ' Use Static DNS' and 8.8.8.8 is set for Primary DNS, will all LAN devices use 8.8.8.8 as their primary DNS server?
And similarly, if Configuration >> WAN >> WAN Service has 'Obtain DNS' set to 'Parental Controls' and Configuration >> Security >> Parental Control Provider is configured (to OpenDNS), will all LAN devices use 208.67.222.222 as their primary DNS server?

This isn't clear in the manual and I've always scratched my head when setting this on my Billion devices.

User Router's settings as DNS Server = router will be the DNS server in conjunction with either ISP DNS or Static DNS

If you want clients to get 8.8.8.8 or 208.67.222.222 dns servers, then you need to untick the 'Use Router's settings as DNS Server' and enter the DNS servers you want the clients to obtain from the router

If you use the Use Static DNS option this will be DNS servers the router will use

Thanks for this. Whilst it's useful information, it doesn't quite answer my questions.

To put those another way - if I set the DNS server I want to globally use in the WAN Service configuration page and check the 'Use Router's settings as DNS Server', in the LAN configuration page, will every client on my LAN use the DNS server(s) I've set in the WAN Service configuration page?

It will first try to resolve the IP address for the domain within the routers memory (it will check if you have visited bbc.co.uk before and use the same IP address to resolve your request), if can't (meaning the router does not have record of the IP address for the domain) then it will use the DNS servers you set on the WAN page.
