Sky not assigning IP address
Up until this morning my box has been working fine 7800N using firmware 1.06h
This morning my box won't obtain DHCP from Sky, I plugged my Sky hub in and it connects fine. Has something changed overnight?

Try changing over to PPPOA, we have had some reports that Sky are reverting back to PPPOA with ADSL customersmobisat wrote:Up until this morning my box has been working fine 7800N using firmware 1.06h

Re: Sky not assigning IP address
i've been having all sorts of problems with sky and my 7800 over the last couple of weeks. swapping the 7800 out for either of the two "sky" routers (netgear phase 1 / sagem phase 2 refresh) i have delivers a stable connection straight away. using the 7800 gives a stable connection pretty much 24x7 with only one or two outages per day, then every few days or so the adsl connection will drop and fail to connect over an over again, eg. :
although i tested mpoa / mer ages ago, the 7800 has been configured to use ppoa for months now. i've swapped out all the other components but to no avail.
sky router stats:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5021 kbps 799 kbps
Line Attenuation 53.5 dB 31.7 dB
Noise Margin 6.2 dB 10.3 dB
as a total guess it seems like sky have changed something that is incompatible with the 7800. i've hunted around on the skyuser forum but can't see anything, will post on there as well.

What your stats like when using the 7800N?Carrot Cruncher wrote:i've been having all sorts of problems with sky and my 7800 over the last couple of weeks. swapping the 7800 out for either of the two "sky" routers (netgear phase 1 / sagem phase 2 refresh) i have delivers a stable connection straight away. using the 7800 gives a stable connection pretty much 24x7 with only one or two outages per day, then every few days or so the adsl connection will drop and fail to connect over an over again, eg. :although i tested mpoa / mer ages ago, the 7800 has been configured to use ppoa for months now. i've swapped out all the other components but to no avail.Code: Select all

Re: Sky not assigning IP address
These stats look fine, they have the almost the same sync rate but the 7800N is showing a better SNR downstream value.Carrot Cruncher wrote:7800 stats :

Once thing to try is higher SNR to try and make the ADSL line more stable.

Re: Sky not assigning IP address
thanks for confirming. would this explain the symptoms i'm seeing where the connection is stable for days on end and then simply can't sync at all? at the point the 7800 starts having problems i switch it out for one of my sky routers for a few hours. after this i switch back to the 7800 and it works ok again for another few days. i'm not sure if it works again because i've connected another router (somehow stabilising the line?), because the 7800 has been switched off for a few hours, or pure coincidence.

Re: Sky not assigning IP address
Could be a case of overheating, make sure you get plenty of air circulation around it.
Seem to recall this has been an issue on this forum previously.

Re: Sky not assigning IP address
thanks for the suggestion. this may be it. it's just dawned on me that the problems only started occurring after i moved a bunch of kit, including the 7800, a few weeks ago. because it's the non wireless version i had it stuck in a cupboard with a switch on top of it (had meant to move this but forgot all about it). it was pretty warm. i've moved things around so it is fully ventilated now.

Re: Sky not assigning IP address
router lasted until 17:30, since my last post, and then bombed out failing to connect. current stats from sky router are :
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4431 kbps 189 kbps
Line Attenuation 54.5 dB 33.8 dB
Noise Margin 4.5 dB 0.1 dB
which looks very wrong. a call to sky maybe?
