Fixed IP for VPN Hosts - Is this possible?

Post by sgeklor »

Hi there, I have configured my 7800N for PPTP VPN and have this working correctly.

The 7800N allocates IP addresses automatically to clients that connect to the VPN, and there is an option to specify the "Starting IP" for those allocations.

Again, I have all this working correctly and understand how it should be setup.

However, I am wishing to allocate my VPN clients a fixed IP. Is this possible?

When connecting to the VPN using Windows 7 I can specify a fixed IP address under the networking properties->TCP-IP v4 page. But when I attempt to do this the connection will not work. The 7800N system log contains:

=================================================================
Sep 17 13:14:08 daemon pppv[1067]: Plugin /lib/pptpd-logwtmp.so loaded.
Sep 17 13:14:08 daemon pppv[1067]: pppv started
Sep 17 13:14:08 daemon pppv[1067]: Using interface pppv0
Sep 17 13:14:08 daemon pppv[1067]: Connect: pppv0 <--> /dev/ttyp0
Sep 17 13:14:11 daemon pppv[1067]: CHAP peer authentication succeeded for <<<my VPN username>>>
Sep 17 13:14:11 daemon pppv[1067]: MPPE 128-bit stateless compression enabled
Sep 17 13:14:13 daemon pppv[1067]: LCP terminated by peer (Q4`M-W^@<M-Mt^@^@^@^@)
Sep 17 13:14:13 daemon pppv[1067]: Modem hangup
Sep 17 13:14:13 daemon pppv[1067]: Connection terminated.
Sep 17 13:14:13 daemon pppv[1067]: Connect time 0.1 minutes.
Sep 17 13:14:13 daemon pppv[1067]: Sent 112 bytes, received 168 bytes.
Sep 17 13:14:13 daemon pppv[1067]: Exit.
=================================================================

I enabled logging on the Windows side and all that comes up in the system log (source "RasMan") is:

=================================================================
CoID={24F408D7-25D9-4482-ABA0-8613F5E59C44}: The connection to <<<my connection name>>> made by user <<<my VPN username>>> using device VPN3-1 was disconnected.
=================================================================

The logging output here is completely useless, which is why I'm posting to the forum for assistance.

Is there any way for VPN clients to the 7800 to be assigned a fixed IP address? Should I attempt to reserve a host on the DHCP server? Does this even make sense? I don't know if PPTP connections have a MAC address.

Any help would be most appreciated, thank you,

Ash
